After the DC Extended Universe ended with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn took over at DC Studios along with producer Peter Safran, starting a new continuity with 2025’s Superman. The latest film in that new franchise is Supergirl, directed by Cruella and I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie, centered on Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El.
If you don’t remember, we were first introduced to Milly Alcock as Supergirl at the end of 2025’s Superman, when she visited her cousin at the Fortress of Solitude to pick up her dog, Krypto, whom he had been watching while she was off-world partying.
Supergirl picks up with Kara/Supergirl continuing her “pub crawl” partying on planets with red suns, where she is able to feel the effects of alcohol. While she is in one bar, she encounters Ruthye (Eve Ridley), a young girl whose parents and brother were ruthlessly slaughtered by a band of human traffickers known as the Brigands and their leader, Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts).

Although Kara initially resists the call to action, refusing to help Ruthye seek revenge against Krem, she is reluctantly forced to join the cause when Krem steals her ship and poisons her dog, Krypto. This sets her out on a quest to hunt down the Brigands and acquire the antidote before the time runs out and Krypto cannot recover.
Although Supergirl is only the second film in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, we can already see how this movie is starting to plant the seeds for the future of the franchise. Craig Gillespie’s film contains a cameo from Superman star David Corenswet and introduces Jason Momoa as fan-favorite character Lobo.
In this confusing mythology where some characters are being recast, others are being carried over from the previous DC Extended Universe, and in the case of Momoa, some actors are returning as different characters, all eyes are on the first few films of this franchise to see how they will set the tone and build the world of this new vision.
So, everyone is wondering… does Supergirl continue the long-standing comic book movie tradition of including a post-credits tease of what is to come next?

Why doesn’t Supergirl have a mid-credits scene?
With James Gunn’s Superman having had two post-credits scenes, fans understandably expected Supergirl to follow suit and have one or more stingers. However, Supergirl is a pretty self-contained adventure set in the DC Universe. Adding a post-credit scene to the film might have undermined the movie’s focus on its heroine. Though, as a fan of Lobo, I have to admit I was hoping to see a bit more of the Main Man. (We never got to see space dolphins!)

But what is the future of Supergirl in the DC Universe? Although we didn’t get a Marvel-style “Supergirl will return” confirmation, James Gunn has already confirmed that actress Milly Alcock has officially been cast in the next film in the franchise, Superman: Man of Tomorrow. This is no surprise, considering that despite the movie’s mixed reception as a whole, Alcock’s performance as the iconic character is one of its most universally praised aspects.
The ending of Supergirl also includes a bit of a tease for the future of the DC Universe. With Kara telling her cousin, Clark/Superman (David Corenswet) that she plans to stay on Earth, it seems likely that she will team up with him in the franchise’s next entry to fight the bad guys.
