Daredevil: Born Again directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead are opening up about the big death in the first episode of the MCU show.
Marvel Studios‘ Daredevil: Born Again premiered on Disney+ on March 4, 2025. Following the events of the Netflix series, the new show sees Charlie Cox reprise his role as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio return as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.
Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson also return as Karen Page and Franklin “Foggy” Nelson; however, Foggy’s MCU future may not be a long one, as the character is killed by Wilson Bethel’s Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter during the opening moments of Daredevil: Born Again’s first episode.
What did Daredevil: Born Again’s directors say about Foggy’s death?
Speaking about the sequence on The Official Marvel Podcast, Benson and Moorhead broke down the moment and explained why Foggy’s death was necessary to include in the show.
“It’s the incident that makes the entire season happen, right?” Moorhead posed. “[Matt] puts away his mask and decides he went too far. We started realizing the stakes were incredibly high because this person we care about so, so much — and Elden, himself, who had lived with this character for so long, even though he hadn’t played it for a while since then — it made us feel highly emotional.”
Benson added, “Usually when you’re dealing with the idea of death in action entertainment…you just say ‘often.’ These are things that just happen; it’s the expectation of the genre. People mourn for a little bit, but by the time you’re done with the third act, redemption has happened, and everything is fine. This is a show where the grief ripples out in a much more realistic way. Any violence that’s going to happen has consequences that are much closer to real life.”
“And how can you have a show that is saying this, that the consequences are real, but then you never kill anyone you actually care about?” Moorhead continued. “And it’s an atom bomb on his life. And on him as Daredevil. It’s the whole season — and beyond, by the way — of him coming to terms with what he did because of his friend dying.”
