Director Noah Hawley, the mind behind FX’s Alien: Earth, has spoken with Ridley Scott, the director of the first Alien movie, but shockingly not with James Cameron, the director of Aliens (1986). In an August 2025 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hawley said:
I did not have any contact with James Cameron. Not because I didn’t want to, but I don’t know where James Cameron is or what he’s doing. And there’s certainly no obligation for him to talk to me about a movie he made 40 years ago.
Where exactly is Cameron? The successful director talks about his schedule and also shares his thoughts on the Alien franchise in an August 2024 Guardian interview:
It’s kind of trampled ground at this point. I wouldn’t rule anything out but I’ve got 23 other projects in the queue before that hypothetical one so I’m going to guess, with me turning 70, that ain’t gonna happen. You’ve got to pick your battles at some point. You know what I mean?
Not having contact with Cameron has made no difference, as the show is well-received by audiences and critics alike. Noah Hawley is taking creative liberties and pushing the franchise forward in creepy and disturbing ways, Alien-style.
Episode 4 Featured One of The Most Disturbing Additions To The Franchise
Alien: Earth’s fourth episode introduced an original alien that is sinister in every way possible. We originally saw the weird creature taking over a cat and subsequently attacking other hybrids. This octopodal creature, officially called T. Ocellus, latched onto a sacrificial sheep like a parasite.
After taking over the host, the self-aware alien took control of the sheep’s brain functions with a chance of being sentient. Protruding out of just one eye, this alien gives the image of something straight out of a Lovecraft novel.
The FX show has already given us new aliens in the franchise that are straight-up nightmare fuel. Noah Hawley is proud of his work and draws a lot of inspiration from the Cameron movie.
Noah Hawley Breaks Down Wendy’s Connection With the Xenomorphs

Alien: Earth features Sydney Chandler as Wendy, who has a connection with the Xenomorphs. Wendy, as a hybrid, can tune into the Xenomorphs, and the idea came from James Cameron’s Aliens. Noah Hawley, in an August 2025 exclusive with Decider, said:
I’ve just always been struck by this moment in James Cameron’s film where Ripley has rescued Newt and they find themselves in the egg chamber. We meet the Queen and then all these drones come in and Ripley aims the flamethrower at the eggs. Then the queen somehow communicates to these drones to back off and they do. In that moment, you learn so much about these creatures.
Regarding the communication between Wendy and the Xenomorphs, Hawley broke it down further:
I mean, clearly it’s a matriarchy, clearly there’s a hive, clearly they’re drones, and clearly they can communicate on some level. Is it a pheromone? Is it telepathy? Is it a language we can hear, etc…?
Alien: Earth reimagines Ridley Scott’s legendary Alien space-horror franchise through a character whose humanity is anything but artificial.
