Spoiler Alert !!!Potential spoilers for After the Hunt!

Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt follows Alma, played by Julia Roberts, a respected academic whose carefully maintained life begins to unravel when a long-buried secret resurfaces. The film blends psychological drama with moral suspense, unfolding as Alma’s past intersects violently with her present.

Early in the story, Alma appears confident and composed, a woman who has built a life of stability and security. However, as the story unfolds, the audience discovers that everything she has built is on fragile ground.

The premise centers on a decades-old event Alma has spent her adult life suppressing. However, when one of her young students, Ayo Edebiri’s Maggie, accuses her best friend and colleague, Andrew Garfield’s Hank, of s*xual assault, it reignites old memories.

This forces Alma to confront what she once did, what she allowed to happen, and how she has justified her silence over the years.

At the end of After the Hunt, we jump five years into the future, where Alma has remarkably risen to the position of Dean at Yale, while Maggie has pursued healing and moved on with her life. Hank, meanwhile, has faced minimal consequences, losing his faculty position but securing a new job as a spin doctor for a Democrat.

What is Julia Roberts’ Alma’s Secret?

Alma’s secret is at the heart of her internal conflict and shapes every decision she makes throughout After the Hunt. By the end of the film, she collapses from the ulcer pain, which she has been hiding from her husband, Michael Stuhlbarg’s Frederick.

Later at the hospital, she finally reveals the truth. When she was 15, she was groomed by her father’s best friend, whom she believed she was in love with. When he ended the relationship, she was devastated and, in her anguish, fabricated a story that he had assaulted her.

While telling this to her husband, she maintains that it was she who didn’t give him a choice. The man died by suicide three years later, crushed by shame, even though Alma had eventually withdrawn her accusation.

Fredrick immediately challenges her version of events. He tells her that her allegations were not false at all, as she was a child who had been manipulated by a man in a position of trust. Alma’s insistence that she was responsible is, in his eyes, a distortion created by trauma.

This helps explain why Alma reacts the way Maggie tells her about Hank, even when Hank tries to take advantage of her. Her immediate skepticism and her repeated warnings to Maggie not to speak out stem from her own unresolved guilt, her fear of repeating the past, and her inability to see herself as a victim.

What Does the ‘Cut’ Mean?

The final moment of After the Hunt is its boldest. After five years, Alma and Maggie meet at Hank’s favorite Indian restaurant. They have a deep conversation, overcoming their past animosity. When they get up to leave, the director’s voice is heard, yelling Cut!

This moment has sparked widespread discussion regarding its meaning and significance. Guadagnino uses moments that break the fourth wall to pull the audience into the moral puzzle the characters are navigating.

As the filmmaker tells Entertainment Weekly, this scene wasn’t part of the script but something he added just two, three weeks before wrapping. His inspiration came from Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Falstaff, which was in turn based on William Shakespeare’s play The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2.

At the end of this opera, all the characters go in one big line on stage, and they say, ‘Everything in the world is comedy. I love the idea of this fourth wall collapsing, and basically, I tell the audience, ‘This is our story. We said it this way. Make up your mind.’

The ending signals that the audience must decide what they believe, just as Alma has struggled to decide throughout the film. Thus, in a way, the director emphasizes that viewers must continue to ‘hunt’ for the truth beyond the screen.
