A24 is going deep into the horror territory, months after competitive bidding. The indie studio has now officially secured the rights to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a film that introduced us to Leatherface in 1974. Instead of rushing into a feature remake, A24 is opting for a long-form television series, and Glen Powell is backing it by serving as a producer (via The Hollywood Reporter).

A24’s take on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will unfold as a series, and rather than rehashing old film events, the creators will present the wider folklore surrounding Leatherface and his cannibalistic family (via THR).
JT Mollner, who recently wrote the screenplay for The Long Walk, is set to direct the movie. The producing team is stacked with people who are experienced in the horror genre, such as Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Stuart Manashil, Ben Ross, Dan Cohen, and, of course, Glen Powell.
They’ve also brought Kim Henkel on board, who’s the co-writer of the original film. Moreover, the same team is also developing a separate Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, but Mollner is not involved in it.

Glen Powell spoke about his love for the original film, calling it one of his favorites. As someone who’s from Texas, he views the franchise like a cultural artifact of his home state. However, Powell will not be involved as an actor and will only remain off-screen. Similarly, JT Mollner’s motivations are also rooted in admiration and respect for the movie (via THR):
I have so much reverence for [director and co-writer] Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel because they created something bold, transgressive, and truly seminal that holds up even today as the gold standard for horror. When the idea for a long form exploration into this world came to me, I saw it as a fresh way in, as well to honor and build on the existing folklore. It’s the only way I wanted to do it — and I can’t imagine better partners for this concept than A24. This is truly an honor.
