A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 4: Inside Prison Cell Scene That Quietly Reshapes Dunk & Egg’s Relationship

The fourth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was filled with tension as Aerion demanded a Trial of Seven to determine Dunk’s fate. Just before the morbid announcement, Dunk was placed in a prison cell for attacking Aerion, who was breaking the fingers of an innocent Tanselle.

During this scene, Dunk and audiences worldwide were privy to a new Egg: Aegon. Egg, in full Targaryen attire, walks and talks with a new attitude, yet we still see the naive boy underneath. Showrunner Ira Parker spoke to GQ Magazine regarding the scene with the actor Dexter:

First of all, I remember [episode four director] Sarah Adina Smith saying, “I just watched Dexter become a real actor.” He does some incredible work in that scene. We’ve flipped the dynamic pretty significantly.

Ira Parker goes deeper into how the relationship between the pair changed, so let’s decode the newfound dynamic between Dunk & Egg.

Dunk & Egg’s New Dynamic Deepens Relationship

Dunk & Egg’s dynamic of knight and squire remains unchanged following the events of Episode 4, but underneath layers of honour, knighthood, and titles, their core relationship appears to have deepened after Dunk realized that Egg is a Targaryen prince. Ira Parker had this to say:

I think he has, when it comes to Egg, a lot of forgiveness in his heart. He feels as though Egg was sent to him so that he could do for this kid what Ser Arlan did for him and pay it forward…. and that ultimately becomes Dunk’s journey this season: deciding whether or not he wants to be a part of that kid’s life moving forward.

Dunk was taken under Ser Arlan’s wing as a thief from Fleabottom who would’ve been hanged, a very imperfect being to say the least. Parker mirrors the journey between the two and believes that Dunk sees that Egg is still a kid who has had sh*t thrown at him.

We have seen intimate scenes where Dunk agrees to take Egg on as a squire if they survive the tourney, and also the prison cell scene where Egg/Aegon is in tears for deceiving Dunk. Egg, in his heart, knows Ser Duncan is an honorable knight worth squiring for, compared to all the Targaryen princes he has been exposed to.

In another moment of vulnerability, Egg reveals to Dunk how Aerion treated him poorly as a child, and he will not feel bad if Dunk kills him. Before the Trial of Seven begins, we see Egg ready to be Ser Duncan’s squire as the episode’s final twist unravels.

Episode 4 ends with Baelor joining Ser Duncan’s Seven against Aerion in the trial, with the Game of Thrones theme playing in the background to give us chills while reminding us of why George R. R. Martin’s work is top-notch. Here are key details of the show.

Ser Duncan now has his Seven needed to start the trial that will determine his fate in Westeros. With familiar faces backing him, the future remains uncertain. That is, unless you’ve read the books.

Spoiler Alert !!!EPISODE 5 SPOILERS BELOW

Episode 5 will deliver the full Trial of Seven at Ashford, cementing Dunk & Egg’s bond for good. Ser Duncan the Tall will be pushed to the edge, and survives by sheer toughness and bravery.

The Trial of Seven will likely end with Baelor dying while trying to save Dunk, and Maekar will offer Dunk a place in his household. Dunk will finally be recognized as a true knight, as he takes Egg with him on his journeys.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere Episode 5 on February 15 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO Max.
