Insidious 6 would not have happened if not for Lin Shaye’s timely intervention. Despite being canceled by Sony initially, Shaye made sure that the project was reinstated.
Variety revealed in an exclusive report that Insidious: Out of the Further was initially scrapped by Sony. However, the decision did not sit well with Shaye. Instead of backing down, she told herself, “F*ck this.” The 82-year-old then proceeded to write a letter to Tom Rothman, who served as the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO. While she pleaded for the project to continue, Rothman granted her wish and greenlit the feature.
Recalling the incident, Shaye told Variety, “It gives me chills because I don’t consider myself a mover and a shaker. It’s not like I single-handedly got this movie made, but I spoke up. I think speaking up must never, ever stop. Don’t ever stop.” Fans are likely thankful, as Insidious: Out of the Further did garner some impressive reactions.

As the latest installment of Insidious leaves several question marks about the Further, Shaye hinted at her comeback in future projects. “I think it’s really not over. I just don’t think it is.” She also added about her character, “People really do love that woman. And I say ‘that woman’ because it’s hard for me to recognize that I created that. I have trouble accepting my own success in some ways; I’m always picking: ‘This could be better, and this could be better.’ I’m never quite satisfied.”
The veteran actor plays a central role in all of the Insidious movies. Her character, Elise Rainer, has the ability to travel between dimensions while helping people to fight horrific demons. In the recent movie, too, when Gemma realizes that she can travel to the Further and bring back ghastly spirits to the real world, Shaye’s character helps her to fend them off, even from the afterlife.
Insidious: Out of the Further secured an impressive box office run. According to The Numbers, the movie grossed $64,671,844 worldwide against a production budget of $18 million.
