Spider-Man fans have received a new look at Sony’s canceled Sinister Six movie. The artwork features Andrew Garfield‘s web-slinger hanging upside down in front of a mysterious glowing device inside an underground laboratory. It also contains a clever hidden detail that references the wall-crawler.
Artist Victor J. Martinez shared the concept art for a shelved Spider-Man project on Instagram. The illustrator wrote in the caption, “Sharing with you some concept art I did for an unmade/untitled Spider-Man movie from years ago.” Martinez also revealed that he intentionally incorporated “a silhouette of a spider hidden in the design.” The spider shape was designed to stay hidden from most angles, giving the lab a subtle Spider-Man reference.

The artwork also provides a new glimpse at the visual direction of the shelved project, which appears to have been connected to Sony’s planned The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
What does the Spider-Man concept art tell us about the canceled Sinister Six movie?
Artist Victor J. Martinez also shared the early 3D blockout alongside the finished artwork to showcase how the design evolved during the process. The illustrator did not officially name the film in his post. However, his comment strongly suggested that the artwork was connected to Sony’s canceled Sinister Six project. Martinez teased in his caption, “This Spider-Man movie would’ve been a fun one with lots of villains… 6 to be exact!… iykyk.”
Sony originally planned Sinister Six as a spin-off set within its Amazing Spider-Man universe. Drew Goddard was set to write and direct the film, with Andrew Garfield reportedly expected to reprise his role as Peter Parker.
Reported plans for the broader Amazing Spider-Man universe included Norman Osborn’s return, while Goddard’s Sinister Six was developed as a separate villain-focused story. Various reports have linked several villains to the project, including Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Kraven, Vulture, Rhino, Mysterio, Sandman, Venom, and more.
However, the poor box office of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and various other reasons forced Sony to reconsider the decision.
