Stranger Things breakout star Sadie Sink has officially broken her silence after months of intense secrecy surrounding her mystery MCU role. THer comments come right after she made her explosive debut as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The 24-year-old actress shocked Marvel fans by admitting that she was completely unfamiliar with the iconic mutant when Marvel Studios first reached out to her. In a candid interview with Variety, she said:
Honestly, I knew nothing about her [Jean Grey]. People had started rumors about me playing that character for like years, it had kind of been circulating online so that was all I knew about her. But I had never seen X-Men, so I was just like unfamiliar.
Her confession that she basically had very little idea not only about Jean Grey, but also about the entire X-Men, could be jolting to the fanbase. However, during her research on Spider-Man, Sink figured everything out about Jean Grey by diving deep into the comics.

Sink’s introduction as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day offers a radically fresh take on the character. Rather than arriving as a polished superhero, she enters the MCU as a flawed, isolated, and morally grey runaway. While her character’s debut might’ve been villainous, it has added layers to Jean Grey. Sink revealed that diving into Jean’s heavy comic history allowed her to appreciate the character’s dark complexity and emotional depth.
In the interview, Sink also stated that this combination of emotional depth and Jean’s unstable powers will be exciting. She said:
So, knowing Jean’s struggle will be important in the future of her character and where she goes, just makes her really well-rounded, which I’m excited for.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has already confirmed that Sink’s Jean Grey carries immense significance. Sink’s character is poised to play a foundational role in the MCU’s upcoming X-Men reboot, directed by Jake Schreier (via Total Film).
Clearly, Jean’s journey is just beginning. Fans are already wildly speculating how her volatile powers will evolve. Especially as she paves the way for a brand-new generation of mutant heroes.
