Spider-Man star Tom Holland may have let slip an uncertain future for the superhero character in the MCU. During the promotional tour for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland’s comment about the franchise’s next step may have left fans in a daze. The upcoming movie will be his fourth solo outing as Spider-Man.
In an interview with HugoDécrypte, the actor was asked if he would star in a fifth Spider-Man film “without hesitation”, to which Holland promptly replied, “Pass.” The 30-year-old was answering a series of questions in a rapid-fire round, answering every question except the one about the next Spider-Man adventure.
What could happen after Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Fans will find Tom Holland’s answer perplexing, given that the actor had recently expressed interest in reprising the role in the future—Holland’s position on returning as Peter Parker has fluctuated between yes and no over the years. Following 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor had said he would regret playing the role after turning 30. However, he retracted his viral statement earlier this year after hitting the number.
Holland’s pass on the question is likely due to the interviewer asking if he would return “without hesitation.” The actor has publicly talked about the difficulties of making blockbusters, taking an impromptu break from acting in Hollywood after 2023’s The Crowded Room.
Neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures have officially announced a fifth film. With the events surrounding Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars shrouded in secrecy, Spider-Man’s future is unclear to fans. Holland has also advocated for handing the baton to a live-action iteration of Miles Morales in the future. He also seemingly teased the arrival of Venom in a future movie.
Fans will have to wait a little longer to find out about the hero’s fate when Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31. At the time of writing, the film has an impressive 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, counting 121 reviews.
It remains to be seen when and if Tom Holland will return in a fifth Spider-Man film.
