Black Panther 3 arrives in theatres on December 15, 2028. That’s a long way off, and there’s a reason for it. The movie lands well after Avengers: Doomsday (December 18, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (December 17, 2027), which means Wakanda’s next chapter will play out in whatever version of the MCU exists once the Multiverse Saga wraps up.
That’s a six-year gap since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and a full decade since the original. Marvel hasn’t confirmed when filming starts, though Coogler did share one production detail on stage. The movie will be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film, a first for Marvel Studios.

It is the first Black Panther movie since 2018 to actually have a Black Panther leading it. The reveal came at Marvel SDCC, where Ryan Coogler introduced David Jonsson as the MCU’s new Black Panther. Jonsson, known for Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, and HBO’s Industry, plays T’Challa’s son T’Challa II / Toussaint.
Jonsson walked out to a standing ovation and kept his remarks short, thanking Coogler and Feige. This ends years of rumours pointing to Damson Idris, and it’s the first time the mantle has been recast since Chadwick Boseman’s death in 2020.

Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who joined Coogler on stage, are also returning for the third movie. Denzel Washington is playing a major role in it, which the actor accidentally revealed some time back. Lupita Nyong’o‘s Nakia feels essential given she’s the character’s mother, but Marvel hasn’t confirmed her yet.
Black Panther 3 Plot: What Is the Movie About?

Ryan Coogler kept it simple on stage. Wakanda Forever introduced Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa’s son, who grows up and comes of age in this movie. So it’s a coming-of-age story about the next generation stepping into the mantle, reportedly with his eyes on the Wakandan throne. That framing suggests something noticeably different in tone from the first two entries.
There’s one obvious wrinkle. Toussaint was a small child at the end of Wakanda Forever, and Jonsson will be 35 by release. Bridging that needs a serious time jump or something stranger. Many fans suspect Avengers: Secret Wars is the answer, since Marvel is expected to reshuffle its universe there.
However, we don’t have any other major plot updates. No villain, no synopsis, and no confirmation of where Shuri fits now that someone else is wearing the suit.

With a December 2028 date and filming yet to begin, a first look realistically isn’t coming until 2027 at the earliest. Marvel is expected to share more about the movie in the coming days.
