The latest Harry Potter TV show casting includes an iconic character from the books. The move also shows how HBO is looking to learn from the movies’ mistakes.

According to a new report, the upcoming HBO series has added British comedian Peter Serafinowicz in the role of Peeves the Poltergeist. The character is a fan-favorite in the Harry Potter books, known for causing chaos throughout all of Hogwarts. While not a hugely important character, Peeves’ inclusion shows that HBO is looking to right some wrongs that people had with the film adaptations of the book.

For those unaware, although Peeves plays a fun role in the Harry Potter books, he is fully omitted from the movie adaptations. He isn’t the only character that is featured heavily in the books but omitted from the movies. These include people like Charlie Weasley, Marietta Edgecombe, Winky the House Elf, and more, all of whom don’t serve super important roles in the story, but provide a extra backstory and fun moments.

The likeliest reason for their omission is just due to the movies flowing better at a trimmed-down length, but their exclusion has always drawn disappointment among fans. With the upcoming HBO show, though, WB has a chance to right the wrongs fans feel. By including even more characters who never got the chance to shine, not only will the show be able to differentiate itself more from the movies, but it can also give fans who might’ve felt they didn’t need to watch the show a new reason to.

As the upcoming TV show also set to be filmed across almost a decade, it will have the chance to explore much more of the books. Characters like Peeves won’t play huge roles in the show at all, but their inclusion will help flesh out the show and make it what HBO is hoping to achieve, a definitive way to experience the iconic books in live-action.
