What else do we know about the remake of the classic 1980s Bruce Campbell horror movie?

The Maniac Cop remake will be directed by Refn, who’s also serving as a producer through his NWR Originals banner. It is executive-produced by Christina Erritzøe and Kimberly Willming, along with Vincent Maraval for GoodFellas. Mubi is financing the project and will be handling its North American distribution rights. The streamer is also committed to giving the film a wide theatrical release.

Refn has been developing the remake since 2016. It was originally set up as a miniseries at HBO. However, after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, Refn ultimately decided to rework the Maniac Cop project into a movie remake instead. Further details about the plot and characters are still under wraps.

“The concept has always appealed to me,” Refn said in a previous statement. “In today’s political and social climate, the iconography of Maniac Cop alone provokes an immediate, uneasy reaction. I’ve been watching it all unfold while constructing this project in the shadows… waiting. Now, that moment has finally arrived. The time has come to unveil a radical new vision where there is no protection, no safety net, only mayhem…”

The original cult classic horror movie was directed by William Lustig from a screenplay written by Larry Cohen. The story was set in New York City, following a murderous ex-cop who has come back from the dead to seek revenge on his enemies. The film starred Robert Z’Dar, Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Laurene Landon, Richard Roundtree, William Smith, and Sheree North. It currently holds a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
