Pixar has released the first official Gatto trailer. In our first look at the movie, it’s clear Pixar is injecting some much-needed originality in the new movie.

“In Gatto, after years of maneuvering the canal-ridden, superstitious city of Venice, Italy, Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives. Indebted to Rocco, the local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose—unless Venice gets the better of him first,” reads the official synopsis of the film.

Gatto is directed by Enrico Casarosa (Luca), and features a star-studded cast that includes Mark Ruffalo and Laurence Fishburne as of now. The movie is set to release on March 5, 2027.

Gatto trailer review

The new Gatto trailer absolutely shows off what many were hoping to see from the new Pixar movie. When the first piece of art for the movie was shown, many were surprised to hear that the hand-painted style of it wasn’t just concept art, but genuinely how the movie would be animated. The brief look at the new movie confirms that, with the film sticking to an almost oil painting-like look for its Italian backdrop.

While past Pixar movies haven’t exactly been unoriginal, many fans (including myself) have wished that the company would go back to some of its older looks. Prior to the last decade or so, Pixar seemed to dabble in new styles and looks with every movie, before adhering to what felt like the same style for animation and looks beginning with 2015’s Inside Out. In this regard, it’s awesome to see Pixar go back to a super unique, never-before-seen look for the company.

In terms of the movie, it also looks like a fun time! The movie is channeling an old school mob movie feel, and with the inclusion of cats into the mix, it can scratch the itch of funny and serious.
