Supergirl director addresses the inevitable comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy. Craig Gillespie helms the upcoming DCU flick starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. The director recently expressed his honest thoughts on why comparisons to DCU head James Gunn‘s hit MCU space movies were simply unavoidable.
What did Craig Gillespie say about Supergirl and Guardians of the Galaxy?
Ever since Supergirl’s promotional material began rolling out, comparisons to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies have been inevitable. This is largely due to the shared space setting that runs through both franchises.
For many people, the overall Supergirl tone looks similar to the GOTG movies. Reflecting on the matter, director Gillespie recently shared his opinion. As reported by Gamesradar, he explained his point by saying, “We’re in that arena, but it’s a space I’ve always played in.”
Gillespie added, “There are only so many space movies. And we’re in the superhero universe, with that dance of humor and darkness and drama, which I love.”

Fans will be eager to watch Supergirl and judge for themselves whether it is truly similar to the GOTG films or has a different identity of its own, despite the space-based setting. Besides Alcock in the titular role, the movie will also feature Jason Momoa as Lobo.
Other cast members on the project include Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, Ferdinand Kingsley, and Diarmaid Murtagh. Supergirl will also feature a cameo from David Corenswet as Kara’s biological cousin Kal-El, or Superman.
Kara was first seen in last year’s Superman, starring Corenswet, during the closing moments alongside Krypto, her dog. The beloved puppy will have a very important role in the upcoming movie.
Supergirl comes out in theaters on June 26, 2026.
