During Minecraft Live at TwitchCon Rotterdam, Mojang and Warner Bros. finally pulled back the curtain on the sequel to A Minecraft Movie, A Minecraft Movie Squared, which is set to release in 2027.
Alongside the title announcement, several returning cast members were confirmed, along with new additions to the lineup, including Kirsten Dunst as Alex and Matt Berry in an undisclosed role. Jack Black is officially returning as Steve. During Minecraft Live, Black appeared from the New Zealand set alongside Jason Momoa and introduced himself as “Steve” while teasing fans about the sequel.
Since Steve is the movie’s most recognizable character, it was expected that Black would reprise the role. The actor also teased that there is “a lot of new in this movie,” suggesting Steve will encounter new challenges, locations, and creatures in the sequel (maybe a new dance).

Jason Momoa is returning as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, one of the original characters created specifically for A Minecraft Movie. During the Minecraft Live presentation, Momoa introduced himself as Garrett while confirming that filming is currently underway in New Zealand.
In the first movie, Garrett was a former gaming champion and video game store owner who became one of the core members of the adventure. His comedic chemistry with Steve helped make him a fan favorite, and Momoa is now reprising the role in A Minecraft Movie Squared.

The biggest casting reveal for the sequel is Kirsten Dunst as Alex. After being teased at the end of A Minecraft Movie, Alex is finally making her full debut in the live-action franchise. She is replacing Kate McKinnon (voiced) and Alice May Connolly (portrayed Alex in the post-credits scene of A Minecraft Movie).
During Minecraft Live, Dunst appeared on-screen after being introduced by the cast, confirming her role as Alex. Danielle Brooks is also confirmed to return as Dawn, one of the original characters. During the Minecraft Live presentation, Brooks teased that the sequel will take audiences “so much deeper into the Minecraft world.”
She also revealed that viewers can expect new biomes, new characters, and new mobs in the upcoming film. Dawn played a major role in the first movie’s adventure, and her return suggests she will once again be part of the central group exploring the Overworld.
5. Matt Berry (Role Yet to Be Officially Revealed)

Matt Berry has officially joined the cast of A Minecraft Movie Squared, although his exact role has not yet been revealed. During Minecraft Live, Berry jokingly stated that he was not allowed to tell fans who he was playing and humorously pointed out that his costume was definitely not Steve’s.
His costume and comments make it clear that he is not reprising Nitwit or any existing role from the previous movie. While his character remains a mystery, Berry’s addition has sparked major curiosity among fans as the sequel expands the world of the Overworld.
