Bandai Namco has released its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2026, revealing record-high revenue figures, with the biggest contributor being the Gundam Franchise. Bandai Namco has generated 1.348 trillion JPY in net sales, with an 8.6% increase year-over-year (as per the official presentation by Bandai Namco).

Let’s dive into everything that we know about how the Gundam franchise became the biggest contributor, and how Bandai Namco is now betting everything on the future of this franchise.

In the previous fiscal year, Gundam generated 153.5 billion JPY. And then, in the latest FY2026.3 report, that number has been increased to 254.3 billion JPY. This surge is more than 100 billion JPY, which indicates a massive expansion in consumer spending.

The revenue is coming from multiple product lines: toys, hobbies, media, and even arcade amusement. Furthermore, the release of the latest Gundam anime, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, was the primary source of the revenue. This viewership in anime then translates to sales of other items, such as Gunpla models.

The amusement sector saw sustained income from arcade machines as well. By getting consumer money from multiple fronts: movie tickets, retail stores, and arcade centers, Bandai Namco has established an amazing monetization model, especially with Gundam.

Why Bandai Namco Is Betting Big on the Gundam Franchise

There are many franchises that struggle to maintain relevance across different age groups. However, that is not the same for this franchise. There are two parallel tracks: one provides legacy content for the older generations with higher disposable income to spend on Gunplas, and the other other is providing new anime for the younger consumers.

Bandai Namco minimizes the risk by ensuring that each and every piece of media is an advertisement for the physical merchandise. Any major Mecha seen in the anime can be bought in real life as a Gunpla. In fact, the physical merchandise cannot be pirated, unlike the anime medium, which suffers a lot from it.

Bandai Namco is expanding its physical product lines to capitalize on this reality. For example, the new GUNDAM ASSEMBLE miniature game is explicitly designed to be compatible with their existing trading card game.

In the anime and live-action sector, Bandai Namco is pushing beyond Japan now. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Witch of Circe was released in North America, targeting a larger international audience. Production for SEED FREEDOM ZERO, which is a new anime project that will serve as a prequel to the Gundam SEED Freedom anime, is also confirmed.

Furthermore, a live-action Gundam movie is actively in production. This is an attempt to penetrate the mainstream Hollywood film market, which offers significantly more revenue than traditional anime releases. At last, there has been a remaster of the original Gundam anime announced for the 50th anniversary of the franchise. The company is also increasing the number of THE GUNDAM BASE locations internationally.
