The Mandalorian and Grogu’s theatrical debut has delivered a solid start, bringing renewed attention to the duo. After a strong opening, director Jon Favreau has hinted that more stories are already being mapped out.

Director and co-writer Jon Favreau told Entertainment Weekly that he is already thinking about what comes next for the duo. He described their journey as a “wide open canvas” inside the world of Star Wars. Further, he stated he imagines the story like a “garden or a greenhouse,” where different threads can grow in multiple directions.
Favreau also pointed out that Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni is shaping a bigger timeline that connects several story arcs across the franchise. No sequel has been officially confirmed yet. But the director said he has “a lot of notes and ideas” for where the characters could go next within this corner of Star Wars.
The film’s box office performance has also drawn attention. It opened to around $82 million in its three-day domestic weekend. The movie is expected to exceed $100 million on Memorial Day and take its global total to $165 million. Audiences responded positively with an A- CinemaScore. But the debut still stands as the lowest opening for a Disney-era Star Wars film, just behind Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Even so, The Mandalorian and Grogu reportedly played across more than 4,300 theaters with a strong turnout in premium formats. It also had a smaller budget than most Disney Star Wars movies. The second movie is yet to be greenlit. However, Favreau’s comments about the characters’ future hint that there might be a sequel on the cards.
The Mandalorian started as a Disney+ show following bounty hunter Din Djarin and Grogu. They move through a shifting galaxy after the Empire’s fall. The story is now being pushed into a bigger cinematic chapter, linking with a wider Star Wars plan that connects films and streaming projects. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni are steering the vision. And the next phase looks set to expand the universe even further instead of slowing things down.
