Spoiler Alert !!!This aricle contains spoilers from One Piece manga.
Chapter 1183 of One Piece gives fans one of the most emotionally charged and lore-driven chapters in the Elbaf Arc up to now. In this chapter, apart from the constant chaos with Imu, Loki, and the mysterious Rain Goddess Zaza, Oda takes fans by surprise by giving a new story from Brook, which finally expands on a past that fans have waited decades to explore.
It all starts when Brook reveals some information about the lost Kingdom of Esperia and the connection he seems to have with Gunko. All in all, it seems like Chapter 1183 just planted seeds for what could potentially become Brook’s most important story arc after Thriller Bark.
Brook’s Flashback in Chapter 1183 Completely Reframes His Character
In the second half of One Piece Chapter 1183, the reader gets to go years back into the past, revealing a 20-year-old young Brook serving in the Kingdom of Esperia in the West Blue. Far from being just a cheerful musician, Brook is portrayed as a legendary swordsman and the leader of the kingdom’s battle convoy. Oda even reveals Brook’s full face without his trademark glasses, making the flashback feel even more significant.

Esperia itself is presented as a peaceful kingdom deeply connected to music and culture. However, the flashback carries a tragic tone from the beginning because Brook already confirmed in the present timeline that the kingdom no longer exists. The chapter also highlights Brook’s incredible swordsmanship through his “Three-Pace Hum Notch Slash,” a technique so fast that enemies are cut down before realizing they have been attacked.
The narration further describes Brook and Queen Candel as Esperia’s “two great stars,” strongly suggesting their bond went far beyond duty. It seems that Candel clearly trusted Brook deeply, while Brook’s reaction in the present timeline shows he still carries emotional scars connected to her fate.
One Piece: Gunko’s Identity Mystery May Finally Be Taking Shape
The ending of One Piece Chapter 1183 clearly suggested that there is some sort of connection between Queen Candel and Gunko. Brook immediately recognizes Gunko earlier in the arc, and the information provided in this chapter reinforces the idea that either she is Candel or associated with her in some way.

The most important clue is Gunko’s unstable behavior. Earlier chapters already hinted that she possesses multiple personalities or conflicting states of mind. Chapter 1183 reinforces this idea by showing moments where her original personality appears to briefly surface before she returns to a demonic form connected to Imu’s influence.
That detail has fueled theories that Imu may rely on possession, vessels, or corrupted hosts to extend their power. And Gunko could be one of the clearest examples in the recent chapters of the Elbaf arc.
In addition to this, One Piece Chapter 1183 continues the earlier confrontations of the Elbaf arc as Sanji encounters goddess Zaza and Imu’s fight against Loki and Ragnir, while referencing ancient figures such as Joy Boy and the Void Century. Overall, Oda seems clearly trying to link Brook’s personal tragedy with the story’s endgame mythology.
