In a surprising shift within the anime community, Jujutsu Kaisen has officially lost its top ranking as the best battle anime, according to a newly released fan poll. The survey, conducted by the prominent Japanese publication Anime! Anime! to celebrate “Duel Day,” revealed that the supernatural seinen series Bungo Stray Dogs has successfully defended its crown for the fourth consecutive year.
Meanwhile, industry heavyweights Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, and Dragon Ball were left in a three-way tie for the second-place spot. This reshuffling of the leaderboard highlights a growing fan preference for strategic combat and complex character narratives over traditional power-scaling.

For the fourth year in a row, Bungo Stray Dogs (BSD) has proven that it is the series to beat when it comes to “battle” anime. Taking approximately 11% of the total votes, the series managed to outperform massive shonen franchises that often dominate global popularity charts.
The poll was timed to coincide with April 13th’s “Duel Day”, a day in Japan that commemorates the legendary 1612 duel between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro, making the victory even more symbolic for the action-heavy franchise.
The success of Bungo Stray Dogs in 2026 is largely attributed to its unique 10th-anniversary celebrations and the high-stakes narrative of its recent seasons. Unlike many other battle series that focus on physical strength or energy beams, BSD centers on the “Armed Detective Agency,” a group whose members are inspired by real-life literary figures. Characters like Osamu Dazai and Atsushi Nakajima possess supernatural “Abilities” named after famous literary works, such as No Longer Human and Tiger Poet.
The biggest takeaway from the poll is simple: Bungo Stray Dogs did not just win once. It stayed on top for the fourth straight year. The supernatural action series again led the field with roughly 11% of all votes, which is a strong result in a genre usually dominated by giant battle franchises.
Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, and Dragon Ball Tie for #2 Place
While Bungo Stray Dogs stood alone at the top, the second-place spot saw an unprecedented three-way tie between Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and the legendary Dragon Ball franchise. Each of these three series secured roughly 6% of the vote, showcasing how competitive the genre remains even among the most established titles.
For Jujutsu Kaisen, the second-place finish is a notable shift. Despite the massive cultural impact of the “Shibuya Incident” and the hype surrounding the animated “Shimetsu Kaiyu” (Culling Game) arc, it wasn’t enough to reclaim the #1 throne. The Culling Game arc, in particular, has been praised for introducing more battle-heavy episodes than ever before, featuring Yuji Itadori and a host of new sorcerers in a deadly tournament-style survival game.
Demon Slayer continues to hold its own thanks to the breathtaking visual effects from Studio Ufotable. Even as the series approaches its final stages, the bond between Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko remains a core emotional hook that keeps fans invested in every sword swing.
Perhaps the most impressive entry in the tie is Dragon Ball. Decades after its debut, the creation of the late Akira Toriyama remains a fundamental pillar of the genre. Its inclusion in the top three (alongside modern “New Gen” hits) proves its timeless appeal. The survey results arrive just as excitement builds for Dragon Ball Super: Beerus new project, which is scheduled to air in Fall 2026.
The rest of the Top 10 featured a mix of classics and unique niche hits, including Gintama, My Hero Academia, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Interestingly, newer titles like Tougen Anki and the lighthearted BOFURI also made appearances, suggesting that the “battle” genre is becoming more diverse.
