After The Devil Wears Prada 2‘s humongous success, Anne Hathaway has now turned her eyes to a legacy sequel of another beloved 2000s IP, The Princess Diaries. Speaking of the highly anticipated threequel, Adele Lim, who will be helming Princess Diaries 3, has teased the return of several original cast members, adding (via Variety):
If you were a fan of the original first two movies, I think you can look forward to a lot of fun returns
Although the official cast list for the threequel still remains under wraps, going by Lim’s remarks, fans could expect another The Devil Wears Prada 2-style reunion between the original cast members.
Princess Diaries 3 Will be Wish Fulfillment for Queens
While the story details for the threequel are yet to be disclosed, Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis will be marking her return as the Queen of Genovia this time around.
Further reflecting on this legacy sequel, Lim expressed their desire to do right by its predecessors and the fans with the narrative. She further told Variety that this movie will serve as a wish fulfilment for queens and display a woman in her full power.
We just want to make the story right because it is a franchise that is so beloved by so many people. There are so many movies that are wish fulfilment for princesses, we don’t have a lot of wish fulfilment movies for queens. That’s what we are setting out to do here, to show a woman in her full power.
Given Lim’s track record, which includes titles like Joy Ride and Crazy Rich Asians, which she co-wrote, there’s much to be excited about a modern-day installment in the beloved Hathaway-led franchise.
Is There a Release Date for Princess Diaries 3 Yet?

Despite the excitement from the director, there’s no exact release window for the movie yet, as the shooting and production schedule for the threequel is still being worked out.
Although Hathaway’s tenure in The Devil Wears Prada sequel made it almost impossible to focus on both legacy sequels simultaneously, the actor stressed that the entire team is committed to knocking it out of the park (via Entertainment Weekly).
If I learned anything from [The Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park.
It’s pretty apparent that Princess Diaries 3 is high on Anne Hathaway’s priority list after The Devil Wears Prada 2, and with Adele Lim teasing the return of members from the original cast, it seems production on the sequel could begin sooner than expected. Even without a concrete release window, a 2027 or early 2028 debut feels likely if development proceeds smoothly.
