Unlike many other shonen anime classics, villains are a huge part of the Bleach anime and manga series, whether it be the classic main series or the Thousand-Year Blood War Saga. Tite Kubo has arguably written some of the best villains in shonen; some, but not all. There are a handful of villains in the series who we feel like were abruptly taken off or never truly reached their full potential.

This is where we come in, to take a deep dive into the narrative from the anime episode and manga chapters to fish out some of the top-tier Bleach villains whom Kubo really didn’t let reach their peak. Without further ado, let’s explore them.

TITLEBleachCREATORTite KuboRELEASE DATEOctober 5, 2004IMDb RATING (As of May 8, 2026)8.2/10WHERE TO WATCHHulu (US) and Disney+ (international)

1. Nnoitra Became Nothing More Than a Stepping Stone for Kenpachi

Nnoitra Gilga from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Nnoitra Gilga looked like a simple brute at first, but beneath his cruelty was a deeply insecure warrior obsessed with strength, respect, and fear of weakness. What made his character more interesting is his dynamics with Nel that constantly hinted at unresolved emotional layers and a twisted worldview shaped by Hueco Mundo’s brutality.

What makes him deserving of a second chance is the fact that Kubo literally did not even touch those underlying layers. Instead, Kubo turned him into another stepping stone fight for Kenpachi, which felt like a psychologically layered villain’s wasted potential.

2. Aizen’s Defeat Felt Like a Sudden Power Reset in Bleach

Sosuke Aizen from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Sosuke Aizen is the only character on this list that actually gets a second screening in the series during the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. However, what bothered us was his earlier, initial run as an overarching antagonist of the main series; Aizen is iconic, but Kubo arguably made him too untouchable.

After years of buildup, his defeat felt more like a sudden power reset than the conclusion of a master manipulator’s journey. From this point to the point of his return felt like a massive wasted opportunity where he could have been explored; perhaps, a longer post-defeat role – where he manipulated events from prison or operated as a chaotic ally – could have added even more complexity to Bleach’s final saga.

3. Tsukishima Could Have Been a Mastermind Psychologist Villain

Shukuro Tsukishima from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Tsukishima was one of the smartest psychological villains in the series, who debuted during the Fullbring Arc. His Book of the End ability completely shattered Ichigo mentally by rewriting the memories of everyone around him, which is why he is one of the most powerful psychological villains in the series, and the reason exactly why he felt underused by Kubo.

Kubo could have reused him in later arcs as a terrifying mastermind instead of quietly retiring him after Fullbring. This could have added a completely different perspective to the otherwise action-packed and physical Bleach anime series.

4. Kubo Ended Ulquiorra’s Story the Moment It Became Interesting

Ulquiorra Cifer from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

There are only a few Arrancar who made an impactful and narratively deep showing in the series, and Ulquiorra Cifer is definitely one of them. What makes him special is the complexity of his character.

However, Kubo ended his story the moment it became most interesting – when he was grasping an understanding of what made him an iconic villain in the first place. Ulquiorra’s discovery of humanity should have been the beginning of a larger transformation, which was his peak moment, and shouldn’t have been the end of his character entirely.

5. Gin Deserved More Screen Time as a Redeemed Wildcard

Gin Ichimaru from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Gin Ichimaru is probably one of the most tragic Bleach villains – spending most of the series hiding his true intentions behind a constant smile and cryptic behavior. You may ask where the tragedy is with that? Well, when the truth finally came out that he dedicated his life to avenging Rangiku and killing Aizen, it instantly made him one of the most tragic characters.

The problem is that Kubo killed him almost immediately after revealing his depth. For the most part of his narrative as a villain, the truth was completely hidden, and when we needed the exploration the most, he was deleted from the story. Gin deserved more time as a redeemed wildcard operating between Soul Society and the shadows.

6. Harribel Was Abruptly Defeated Before She Could Truly Evolve

Tier Harribel from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Tier Harribel was one of the few Espada who ruled through loyalty and compassion rather than fear – her devotion to protecting her Fraccion separated her from Aizen’s other followers. She is also one of the strongest among the Espada, second only to a few. However, tragedy found its way into her narrative as well.

She was abruptly defeated and sidelined before her character could truly evolve. While Kubo later implied her importance in Hueco Mundo, the damage was already done, and we strongly believe that she needed a comeback in the series, especially since we saw Grimmjow coming back.

7. Coyote Starrk Never Truly Felt Like a Villain in Bleach

Coyote Starrk from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Bearing the number 1 on his body, Coyote Starrk holds the title of the strongest Espada in the Bleach series. However, Starrk never truly felt like a villain – the Primera Espada was lonely, detached, and almost forced into conflict because of his overwhelming power. He preferred peace over conflict, which already diminished his villain status, considering the Bleach plot system.

His chemistry with Lilynette and reluctant battle against the Soul Reapers hinted at layers Kubo never fully explored. Even if we tap out from that part of the exploration deficiency, why not bring Starrk back as an ally of the Shinigami after the completion of the Arrancar Arc?

8. Kaname Tosen Deserved a Second Chance at His Redemption Arc

Kaname Tosen from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Tosen had a really strong moral ambiguity to become one of the most intriguing Bleach villains, who has a strong ideological conflict. However, whether Kubo had a personal vendetta against him or not, the character was brutally killed ideologically in the series as soon as we entered the Fake Karakura Town Arc.

Once he transformed, the series reduced him into a straightforward monster before abruptly killing him off. His idea of seeking justice and hatred of the Soul Society’s hypocrisy could have easily brought him back with a redemption arc of sorts if Kubo really wanted.

9. Kugo Ginjo Could’ve Become an Anti–Hero Rival to Ichigo

Kugo Ginjo from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Kugo Ginjo is one of the very few major Bleach antagonists who had immense narrative potential that could have been explored throughout the entire series. The leader of Xcution was one of the franchise’s morally gray antagonists; he wasn’t evil for the sake of chaos but was a betrayed Substitute Soul Reaper who lashed out at the system that used him.

His backstory added nuance to Soul Society’s corruption, but after the Fullbring Arc, Ginjo seemed to have somehow lost his main objective and barely explored his perspective further. Ginjo could have become an excellent anti-hero rival to Ichigo instead of disappearing from the spotlight.

10. Grand Fisher’s Narrative Weight Was Suddenly Dissolved by Kubo

Grand Fisher from Bleach | Credits: Studio Pierrot

Remember Grand Fisher, the powerful Hollow that killed Masaki Kurosaki, Ichigo’s mother? Yes, the Hollow that had the most personal connection and potential to become a boss-battle narrative among the other Hollows. But what we got was nothing more than a quick plot resolution and the wasted potential of an exponentially explorative villain arc.

After evolving into an Arrancar-like form, he was quickly erased by Isshin Kurosaki, Ichigo’s father. For a villain tied so deeply to Ichigo’s trauma, Grand Fisher vanished far too early and never reached his full narrative potential. In our opinion, a grand opportunity was completely wasted by Kubo.

Who killed Ichigo’s mother, Masaki Kurosaki, in Bleach?

Ichigo’s mother, Masaki Kurosaki, was killed by a powerful Hollow named Grand Fisher.

How many Espada are there in Bleach?

There are 10 primary Espada in Bleach, ranked 0 through 9 based on their strength.

Who is Kugo Ginjo?

Kugo Ginjo is the major antagonist of the Fullbring Arc and the leader of Xcution.

What are your thoughts on our list of Bleach villains that deserve a second chance in the series to explore their true power and narrative potential? We’d love to hear your opinions in the comments below.
