The second season of Prime Video’s global spy thriller, Citadel, has come to a thunderous conclusion. Leaving behind a trail of bodies in a geopolitical landscape altered forever, Nadia has a lot to unpack and deal with after the aftermath of Season 2.
While the first season focused on the fall of the independent spy agency and the mystery of Mason Kane’s identity, Season 2, consisting of 7 episodes, delved deep into the heart of the Backstop technology and the moral bankruptcy of those engaged in this cruel game.

Abby Becomes a Pawn in Citadel Season 2

One of the most heartbreaking arcs of the season was the transformation of Abby Conroy (formerly Celeste Graham). In the second season, we meet Paolo Braga, who wants to kill the Russian Prime Minister in order to get the deadly satellites that could erase whole countries.
First, he kidnaps Bernard to create a chip that could control people and make anyone do anything. While Bernard escapes, Abby is caught and turned into an assassin. Having spent much of her time this season caught in the crossfire between Manticore’s ruthless efficiency and Citadel’s desperate survival tactics, Abby is eventually turned into a ‘pawn.’
She not only kills Mason but also attacks Nadia. She later assumes the identity of a journalist and is tasked to kill the Russian PM, Aronov.
How Bernard Got Mason Killed

When Abby comes back, Nadia and Mason are unaware that she is the assassin and no longer her former self. Instead, she is being controlled by the chip. However, Bernard knew all along about Abby.
Yet, he never revealed the truth to his team and instead left Nadia and Mason unsafe. Abby ends up shooting both of them, but Mason dies while Nadia is found by others and saved, just in time.
While it was Joana’s fault that Mason is dead, as Abby was just an emotionless assassin, Bernard knew all along. He could have saved Mason instead of having him die as ‘collateral damage.’ It was a cold, calculated move that proved Bernard Orlick is perhaps the most dangerous man in the series, not because of his skills with a gun, but because of his willingness to sacrifice anyone for the “greater good.”
Russian Prime Minister Aronov Had to Die

We trusted Bernard since the start, but he is hardly the man he claims to be. While he sends Nadia and the team to stop Abby from killing Aronov, he has a secret plan with Frank to get Aronov killed.
At the G8 summit in Citadel Season 2, Frank breaks in as a police officer and blows up the Prime Minister’s car with a bomb hidden in his flashlight. During the commotion that followed, he jabbed a needle in Aronov’s heart and poisoned him.
He does this to get Aronov out of the way, as the president is easy to coerce with money. This would allow Bernard to buy the satellites and get rid of them.
Dahlia and Bernard’s Plan to Destroy the Satellites

While all this is going on during the G8 summit, Bernard goes straight to Joana and shoots her in the chest for killing Mason. In a shocking turn of events, it is revealed that Dahlia is working with Bernard.
She is tasked with kidnapping the daughter of Malcolm, who is the trustee of Paolo Braga’s estate. When she threatens to kill his daughter, Malcolm is forced to transfer Paul’s entire estate to her.
When Bernard and the others make their way to their private plane, Dahlia is already there. Using the money, Bernard calls the Russian President and offers double the money that Dahlia had offered him: 24 billion dollars. He promptly agrees, and Bernard gets control of the satellites.
Once they get the password, Celine logs in to the system and destroys them all. The satellites, one by one, blow up and crash down like meteorites.
How does Citadel Season 2 End?
At the end of the Citadel, Abby, Mason, Aronov, and Joana are dead. Abby killed herself by coming close to Nadia and using her gun to shoot herself. Overcome by guilt, she likely sacrifices herself.
After the deaths of Abby and Mason, Nadia and Bernard have a fallout, and she vows never to work with him again for the sake of her daughter. She chooses to walk away from Asha, while it remains unclear what happened to Hendrix.
Two months after the events, Bernard and Nadia meet again at Mason and Abby’s graves. He tries to convince her, but she refuses. While Bernard tries to convince her that people will be after her, she asks him what of his own family that he has kept locked up in a safehouse.
She later gives him a device that has information about the families that survived the Citadel crash and asks him to protect them. They part ways. At the end, we see Nadia going to meet Aparna, the girl that Joana was using to do her dirty work.
While the season ended there, it leaves the door wide open for the story to continue.
