The Ghostbusters franchise is expanding once again, this time with a brand-new animated series headed to Netflix. More than four decades after the original film launched the beloved supernatural universe, original star Dan Aykroyd has officially joined the upcoming project as an executive producer, marking another major step in keeping the franchise alive for a new generation.
When is the release date window for the new Ghostbusters show?
Netflix had previously confirmed that a new Ghostbusters TV show is in the works. But now we also know when to expect its debut on the streaming platform. The high-end animated series is reportedly set to premiere sometime in 2027.
A lot of other details are still under wraps, but the biggest update is that the original franchise’s co-creator, Dan Aykroyd, has boarded the project as the executive producer alongside Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Amie Karp. Moreover, Aykroyd and Kenan will also attend the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The Ghostbusters franchise will also witness a new movie soon. Earlier this year, reports indicated that Sam Jarvis had been tapped to write the project. It will be helmed by Kris Pearn, who previously worked with Netflix on 2020’s The Willoughbys, a highly acclaimed movie. He is also known for the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise, in addition to Shaun the Sheep. Full details on the film are still under wraps, but it’s being described as a new installment in Sony’s Ghostbusters universe.
Following a cold reception to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, there hasn’t been much to look forward to in films. The 2024 entry was panned by critics, with a mediocre 42% Tomatometer score on the review-aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes.
However, the great news is that the likes of upcoming animated projects shall keep the IP alive moving forward. In the past, the franchise has delivered animated titles, with The Real Ghostbusters in the 1980s and Extreme Ghostbusters in the 1990s.
