Jon Bernthal returns as the skull-clad vigilante in the one-hour special. The project carries a TV-MA rating and marks Castle’s first solo outing under Marvel Studios. Bernthal co-wrote the screenplay with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, his collaborator on King Richard and We Own This City.
Bernthal first pitched the special to Marvel Studios during production on Daredevil: Born Again’s first season. Brad Winderbaum described the project as “a shotgun blast of a story.” Bernthal previously promised fans, “It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.” The special picks up with Castle searching for meaning beyond revenge. An unexpected force drags him back into conflict. Jason R. Moore reprises his role as Curtis Hoyle from the original Punisher series on Netflix.
Garth Ennis’s Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank comic run served as the creative north star. Additionally, Bernthal brought former Marine Raider Nick Koumalatsos on board as a consultant. The actor called this the most “high-octane” portrayal of the character to date.
Meanwhile, principal photography wrapped on August 4, 2025, after 12 days of shooting across New York City. Cinematographer Robert Elswit lensed the special on locations in Queens and Brooklyn. Kris Bowers also composed the score following his work on Secret Invasion.
Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Winderbaum and Sana Amanat serve as executive producers. One Last Kill releases one week after the Daredevil: Born Again season two finale. Following the special, Bernthal next appears as Castle in Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31.
