William Golding’s 1954 classic has finally made its way to the small screen. In its first-ever television adaptation, Lord of the Flies will be coming to Netflix this May 2026.

Originally a BBC production, this new series aims to reintroduce the story to a modern audience while staying true to its powerful themes. Here is everything you need to know about this psychological epic.

For US audiences, the four-episode miniseries Lord of the Flies is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on Monday, May 4, 2026. The series previously debuted in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand on February 8, 2026. A release date for other territories is expected to be announced soon (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Who is in the Cast of Lord of the Flies?

Lord of the Flies follows a group of English schoolboys, all of whom are played by relatively unknown child actors. The casting director, Game of Thrones-famed Nina Gold, chose to have an open casting call rather than having famous child actors to take on the roles (via HybeBeast).

Based on William Golding’s dystopian classic, the series follows a group of English schoolboys who are left on a deserted island following a plane crash. However, instead of banding together, they end up falling into factions, leading to an intense power struggle.

Ralph’s group is focused on building shelters and maintaining a signal fire for rescue, while Jack’s group becomes obsessed with hunting and tribalism. Writer Jack Thorne has stated that this adaptation focuses heavily on the modern conversation surrounding “boyhood” and how isolation and fear can lead to the radicalization of young minds (via Tudum).

Is there a Trailer for Lord of the Flies?

Following the international buzz, the BBC officially released its first teaser trailer for the Lord of the Flies adaptation on January 28, 2026, setting a starkly different tone from the later Netflix rollout.

While the later trailers by Netflix specifically for the US rollout leaned into the “tropical nightmare” aesthetic, this initial look emphasized the fragile erosion of British civility, opening with Winston Sawyers Ralph making a desperate, hopeful plea for order amidst the lush Malaysian greenery.

The trailer is underscored by a haunting score from Hans Zimmer and Cristobal Tapia de Veer, blending classical choral music with tribal percussion.

Is it suitable for kids?

The series is rated TV-MA for violence and intense psychological themes. While the characters are children, the content is intended for a mature audience.

Can I watch it worldwide?

No, the series is available for streaming on Netflix in the United States only. In the UK, it is available on BBC iPlayer, in Australia on Stan, and on TVNZ 1 and TVNZ+ in New Zealand. The release for other regions will be announced shortly.
