Summer is a big season for superhero comics. Traditionally, both Marvel and DC schedule major releases for the summer, much like major movie studios. Given that, it behooves us to examine what Comic Books due out in the summer of 2026 have built up the most buzz.

There are a wide variety of highly anticipated comic books releasing in the summer of 2026. Some are new series, centered around beloved characters. Others are big events which promise to change their respective settings forever. The following chronological list offers a selection of both kinds of comics.

Barbara Gordon: Breakout

(Image Source: DC / Yanick Paquette)

Barbara Gordon has been many things in her life. As the first Batgirl, she helped the Dark Knight to protect Gotham City. but when a bullet left her paralyzed, she refused to give up fighting crime. As Oracle, she became the intelligence expert of the superhero community and a member of the Justice League. She remained in this role even after a revolutionary implant restored her mobility. Babs even established her own squad of covert heroes; the Birds of Prey. However, Barbara must now take on an entirely new role alone; that of a convict!

Framed for a crime she didn’t commit, Barbara is sent into Supermax; the pet-project prison of the GCPD’s new commissioner, Vandal Savage. Surrounded by the same super-criminals she helped to put away and her connection to Batman exposed, it will be a challenge unlike any she has ever faced. She may not have access to her usual tools, but she still has her most dangerous weapon – her brilliant mind.

When DC announced the first wave of comic books for the DC Next Level initiative, Barbara Gordon: Breakout stood out. Partly for spotlighting one of the most popular members of the Bat-Family. Partly for a creative team featuring Eisner Award-winning writer Mariko Tamaki and fan-favorite artist Amancay Nahuelpan.

Barbara Gordon: Breakout releases on May 13, 2026.

Absolute Green Arrow

A serial killer is targeting those corrupt billionaires considered untouchable by society. The only indication that the murders are connected is the method of execution; the green arrows found in each of the victim’s bodies. Executive protection specialist Dinah Lance is brought in to investigate the crime, but every answer she finds only raises more questions.

Looking into the backgrounds of the world’s most famous archers, Lance discovers a shared connection to billionaire Oliver Queen. However, Queen is dead under equally mysterious, yet unrelated, circumstances. This leads to a frightening yet inescapable idea; Dinah Lance’s quarry is a monster rather than a psychopath.

There are many reasons why Absolute Green Arrow is one of the most highly anticipated comic books of 2026. The mystery identity of the new Green Arrow, coupled with artist Rafael Albuquerque describing the series as a horror title have snared readers’ imaginations. Even without those hooks, the book would draw attention merely for being part of the smash-hit Absolute Universe.

Absolute Green Arrow releases on May 20, 2026.

Avengers: Armageddon

In the wake of Doctor Doom‘s brief reign as Emperor of Earth, Latveria has fallen into chaos. When Red Hulk defies his own government to claim the nation, a team of heroes must assemble to save the world from General Ross’ hubris. However, there’s no guarantee any of them will survive the war to come.

Writer Chip Zdarsky began laying out the foundation of Armageddon with his run on Captain America and a Wolverine miniseries. However, the event has now been confirmed as kickstarting a rebirth for The Avengers. And yet, despite the main title focusing on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it will also feature the Fantastic Four and the return of Doctor Doom.

The big event does not begin in earnest until June. However, one of Marvel’s offerings for 2026’s Comics Giveaway Day (May 2, 2026) will be a Armageddon tie-in. The event will also feature the introduction of a “mysterious new hero with unrivaled power.”

Avengers: Armageddon releases on June 3, 2026.

Queen in Black

Hela has long sought power beyond her role as the Norse goddess of death. She thought she found it by claiming the throne of Knull, the god of the Symbiotes and the Void. However, she erred in allowing Knull to live so she might torment him, not anticipating his escape.

Now, Knull has acquired new power; ironically by conquering the Lightforce Dimension that long opposed him. The inevitable clash between two of the greatest evils in the Marvel Universe will begin on Earth, with Venom and Thor caught in the middle trying to assemble a team to save the universe.

Spinning out of the Marvel comic books written by Al Ewing, Queen in Black promises an interesting conflict. “As an old-school ‘60s Marvel villain, Hela’s a great match-up against the newer school of Knull,” Ewing noted. “Especially given the steps she’s been taking to get onto his level. There can only be one winner – but whoever wins, it’s the worst news possible for our heroes.”

Queen in Black releases on July 1, 2026.

Batman: Bad Seeds

(Image Source: DC / Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cliff Rathburn, and Tomeu Morey)

It is said that politics makes strange bedfellows and the current government of Gotham City is the proof of that truism. Two years ago, Vandal Savage contrived to be appointed Commissioner of the GCPD. (This was necessary due to his immortality now being limited to within Gotham City.) More recently, Poison Ivy was elected Mayor, intending to put an end to the excesses of Savage’s misrule. However, she ultimately agreed to back Savage’s plan to declare war on the Bat-Family, in exchange for his support of her agenda to make Gotham City the most green-friendly metropolis on Earth.

Unsurprisingly, this alliance was doomed to fail and Savage emerges from it stronger than ever. Abandoned by her political and arcane allies, Poison Ivy will make one eleventh-hour effort to save all that she built. This sets up the background of Batman: Bad Seeds.

Set across a single long, dark night, Bad Seeds will place the Batman family in the middle of a two-front war. On one side will be the primordial forces commanded by Poison Ivy, as hostile plant life overtakes the city. On the other will be Vandal Savage, leading a police department armed with advanced technology, transformed into his own private army.

Few details have been confirmed about Batman: Bad Seeds beyond a release in the third-quarter of 2026. Presumably it will be taking place across multiple comic books, particularly the Batman and Poison Ivy monthly series. The only thing certain beyond that is that the governance of Gotham City seems likely to change again once the dust is settled.

Batman: Bad Seeds begins in Fall 2026.

How we chose 2026’s Most Anticipated Superhero Comic Books

The five comic books on this list were chosen from among various Marvel and DC titles schedule for publication from May 2026 onward. Obviously, the title had to involve superheroes in some fashion, which eliminated some anticipated series like the new line of Vertigo Comics. Beyond that, priority was given to comics tying into major storylines and multiple monthly books.
