Sydney Sweeney is suiting up for battle as Netflix and Legendary Pictures officially launched production on their live-action Gundam movie with a fully assembled cast ready for the franchise’s biggest mission yet.
Live-action Gundam movie starts production
Netflix and Legendary Pictures have officially begun production on the live-action Gundam movie in Queensland, Australia. Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle directs the film from his own script. Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo lead the ensemble cast in the first live-action adaptation of the franchise.
The movie follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposing sides of a decades-long war between Earth and its former space colonies. “As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could decide the fate of humanity,” reads an early description.
Bandai Namco Filmworks pioneered the sci-fi subgenre known as “mecha” through the long-running Gundam multimedia franchise.
Jason Isaacs and more added to Gundam movie cast
Netflix and Legendary have added six new cast members to the production. Jackson White, Nonso Anozie, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Ida Brooke, and Jason Isaacs join the ensemble (via Deadline). Character details for all new additions remain under wraps.
White is best known for Tell Me Lies, while Anozie previously starred in Mickle’s Sweet Tooth. Additionally, Walton appeared in Under the Bridge, and Rudynskyi currently features in The Agency. Meanwhile, Brooke will next appear in Dune: Part Three, and Isaacs recently starred in The White Lotus. Furthermore, Shioli Kutsuna, Michael Mando, and Gemma Chua-Tran round out the previously announced supporting cast.
Legendary Pictures produces the film in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks. Moreover, Mickle produces alongside Linda Moran through their company, Nightshade, and is joined by Cale Boyter, Ali Mendes, Sweeney, Centineo, and Enzo Marc. Matthew Jenkins, Makoto Asanuma, and Naohiro Ogata also serve as executive producers.
Notably, Netflix moved to acquire the film in January.
