The Mandalorian & Grogu are the first time a pillar of the Star Wars franchise is jumping from a streaming service to the big screen. The three seasons of The Mandalorian were able to deliver a heartwarming and action-packed story about a father-son dynamic that struck a chord with Star Wars fans across the world.

Now, it is known when The Mandalorian is set in the Star Wars canon. The story begins after the fall of the Empire, with Luke Skywalker trying to restart the Jedi Order by actively looking for students. In Season 2, Luke ends up taking Grogu to his new Jedi order, where he begins training the youngling in the ways of the Jedi. By the time Season 3 of the show rolls around, a lot of things have changed. Mandalore has been restored. An important imperial remnant faction is destroyed, and Din Djarin has begun helping the Republic. This begs the question, when is The Mandalorian & Grogu set in the Star Wars timeline?

The Mandalorian & Grogu Is Set Closer To Return of the Jedi Than To The Force Awakens

The Mandalorian takes place at a time when Luke Skywalker has yet to start his Jedi school, with Grogu being possibly the first student that he recruits (and the first student that walks away from his academy). The story takes place years before Luke takes on his nephew, Ben Solo, as his apprentice.

The Mandalorian & Grogu, which takes place after the events of The Mandalorian Season 3, is also set in this era, where the New Republic, led by the likes of Leia Organa and Luke Skywalker, struggles to put down Imperial warlords as they try to bring peace to an infant Republic. Din Djarin and Grogu are also going to be active parts of the effort, given that Din has taken up work with the Republic. This is going to lead him to cross paths with characters that fans have seen before in IPs set during the Empire’s height, and new characters that are coming out of the shadows to restore or defeat the Empire for good.

Is There Going to Be a Season 4 of The Mandalorian?

Jon Favreau, the creator of the series and the director of Iron Man, has stated that there was indeed a fourth season that he wrote out, with the intention of it following the events of Season 3. However, the SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the project to be delayed. Lucasfilm then re-evaluated its strategy for Star Wars, deciding to pivot to a movie instead. This film would eventually become The Mandalorian & Grogu (via THR)

So far, there is little update on whether Din Djarin and Grogu are going to return to the small screen, or if the characters are going to remain as fixtures of the box office for the Star Wars IP. It really depends on how the film is received, and if the future slates for Star Wars are has sapce for these characters to tell their stories.

The upside of one of these characters being of Yoda’s species is that they can be used for a slew of Star Wars projects set after the Skywalker Saga, given the species’ long life span. Grogu could very much show up in films like Star Wars: Starfighter, which is set five years after Rise of Skywalker. It is also possible that Din Djarin will appear in animated series that are set during the New Republic Era, if Lucasfilm ever decides to go there.
