Euphoria Season 3: Why Hans Zimmer Replaced Labrinth in HBO Drama

After composing music for two seasons of Euphoria, Labrinth is confirmed not to feature in the music for Season 3 (via Rolling Stone). Last year, it was announced that Hans Zimmer had joined the third season of the show. It was reported that he would collaborate with Labrinth for the show.

While Zimmer and Labrinth expressed excitement to work with each other, the latter appeared to have some major issues with the show and his record label. In an explosive social media post (now deleted), Labrinth called out both Euphoria and Columbia Records.

Zimmer will now take on sole composing duties for the Season 3 soundtrack. Fans might not be too happy with this decision, as they had grown fond of the British composer’s iconic music for the show. He set a distinguished moody composition for the first two seasons, which included tracks like Still Don’t Know My Name, Forever, and I Never Felt So Alone.

When he joined the HBO show last year, Zimmer had praised the All for Us singer, sharing on Instagram, “Labrinth’s music has shaped the show’s identity.” The singer was also more than excited to welcome Zimmer on board, sharing, “Another chapter in the Euphoria universe! So great to join Hans, one of my heroes in film score, and bring some new magic to this new season. Love x.”

In a strongly worded post, Labrinth distanced himself from Euphoria last month. He even hinted at his retirement in the post, which has since been deleted. In his statement, he wrote, “I’m done with this industry” (via Deadline).

He made it clear that he was unhappy with his current record label, Columbia Records, and the show that gave him some of his best hits in recent times. He wrote, “F**k Columbia. Double F**k Euphoria. I’m out. Thank you and good night.”

While the post didn’t make it clear what had happened between him and the HBO show, he further expressed his feelings with the music industry in another Instagram post. He shared, “We hover around big stars hoping to be in their place one day like snakes, waiting to eat their owners.”

The All for Us singer accused the music industry of turning artists into “wolves of Wall Street dribbling over stocks and shares.” He further aired his grievances, sharing, “We have meaningful relationships with like minded people and discard them as soon as a bigger opportunity arrives.”

He concluded the post with the declaration: “I don’t subscribe”. His post received support from various people in the industry, including India.Arie, Lauren Jauregui, and actress Jameela Jamil. However, the post still didn’t address his actual issue with the show.

Creator Sam Levinson shared with Rolling Stone that he had no idea what caused the rift between the singer and the show. He shared, “He’s an incredible collaborator and someone who really built the foundation of the sound of Euphoria.”

Filming for Euphoria Season 3 was originally meant to begin in early 2023, but several delays hit the production. By the time cameras finally rolled, nearly four years had passed since Season 2 had rolled out. In these years, several damning things have surfaced about the show.

It was rumored that star Barbie Ferreira was feuding with creator Sam Levinson. She was notably absent from the red carpet of the Season 2 premiere (via The Independent). The rumors intensified after it was announced that Ferreira was not returning to Season 3.

However, Ferreira stated that the claims of a feud were untrue. She shared about her departure on The Viall Files podcast:

But again with acting, things just happen all the time, and you have to have thick skin and just make the right decisions for you and your career. And it was hard. I was really young, and it was just tough, obviously.

Another star, Chloe Cherry, who played drug addict Faye, shared with The Daily Beast that she was asked to film completely naked for her first scene. She shared that she was uncomfortable, but it was her co-star, Tyler Chase, who helped voice her discomfort. She shared:

Sam wanted to do the scene with me completely naked, and Tyler was like, ‘That’s a lot,’ so they decided not to. But I was covered in fake blood and just felt so good being on set.

Cherry’s confession came shortly after Sweeney mentioned the excessive n*dity that Levinson included in his scripts. However, she shared that the creator never pushed it on her. In an interview with Variety, Martha Kelly, who played drug dealer Laurie, shared that she objected to a scene with Zendaya that was beginning to approach “this gross p*dophil*a vibe.”

There were also claims of exploitative work hours. According to Daily Beast, the production had “gruelingly long workdays that could stretch anywhere from 15 to 17 hours.” Actors like Colman Domingo came to the show’s defense, telling THR, “Every single time I’ve been on that set, there’s so much care, so much love, so much creative energy.”

Labrinth’s deleted post only adds to this drama. Levinson went on to create The Idol for HBO in the intervening years, which turned out to be a massive disaster.
