The early press for Absolute Superman #18 hyped the introduction of a variant version of Black Adam. However, the preview of the issue also reveals an obscure member of the Justice League. One who, in the Absolute Universe, is apparently a woman rather than a man.
Written by Jason Aaron, with art by Rafa Sanoval, Absolute Superman #18 opens in Ancient Egypt. Here, a young slave named Teth-Adam lives a miserable existence under the rule of a cruel pharaoh. This background will be familiar to comic readers and fans of the DCEU. However, in this time and place, Teth-Adam’s dreams of becoming something more are fueled by a mysterious, magical woman. One who, in the main DC Universe, is a man and a member of the Justice League.

What Justice League member did DC gender swap?
While not identified by any name, the magical woman refers to herself as a Stranger, “passing through the shadows like a phantom,” This would seem to suggest that she is the Phantom Stranger. Additionally, she has glowing eyes and distinctive gold medallions on her cloak. These are also distinctive markings of the Phantom Stranger.

First appearing in a solo series comic in 1952, The Phantom Stranger has evolved considerably over the years. Originally he was a detective dedicated to exposing criminals who hoaxed supernatural events to scam people. However, he soon developed his own supernatural powers to combat true magical threats.
Despite his longevity, the Phantom Stranger has never been given an official background. There have, however, been several conflicting accounts. Many of them are Biblical in origin. One suggests he was an angel who refused to take sides in the war between Heaven and Hell. Another suggests he is Judas Iscariot, seeking redemption by saving other souls from damnation.

Whoever he is, The Phantom Stranger is recognized as a force of good and order and was offered membership in the Justice League. Whether he formally accepted the invitation is a matter of some debate. However, when he needed the Justice League’s help, he was quick to assert his status as a fellow Leaguer. It remains to be seen if this Absolute Universe Phantom Stranger will play a similar role.
Absolute Superman #18 arrives in comic shops everywhere on April 1, 2026.
