After offering a brief glimpse of the Boy Who Lived in his Gryffindor robes, HBO has now unveiled the first trailer for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and surprisingly, the show is arriving on the streamer sooner than what we were led to believe. While HBO Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys previously shared that the show was eying an early 2027 window (via Deadline), fortunately for fans, the wizarding world will return to the silver screen this Christmas.
Dominic McLaughlin’s titular character takes center stage in the trailer, which draws several parallels to the original movie as both are based on Philosopher’s Stone. On the flip side, the trailer suggests the new adaptation will go beyond what the movie was able to shoehorn in its limited runtime, thanks to the nature of television.
HBO’s Harry Potter Eyes to Expand on Harry’s Pre-Hogwarts Life
The feature-length movie, for obvious reasons, omits many of the novel’s details about the Dursleys’ treatment of Harry in order to make room for the rest of the story within its limited runtime. While the movie does establish them as neglectful guardians, it does gloss over the full extent of the abuse Harry endures during his stay with the Dursleys.
The HBO adaptation seems to be more true to the novel on that front, as the trailer places heavy emphasis on Harry’s struggles with the Dursleys, who come across as far more vindictive towards Harry. From Petunia cutting Harry’s hair while saying he’s not special to Dudley picking on him at School, the show doesn’t appear to be shying away from the Dursleys’ abuse.
This approach to the source material could be one of the silver linings of this HBO remake, as they have the opportunity to use the medium of TV to expand on the finer details that never made it to the big screen. And according to Warwick Davis, who is reprising the role of Professor Filius Flitwick for the remake, the HBO reimagining will be more faithful to the novels than its predecessors (via Screen Rant).
I’m working on it at the moment, but I can’t really tell you anything other than we’re retelling those wonderful stories, but with more depth and detail than has been seen before. They’re very faithful adaptations of the book.
With the show now just a few months away from its premiere, it’ll be interesting to see if this can replicate the magic of the original adaptation, which defined an entire generation’s childhood.
