A new trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 sheds light on everything fans love about the franchise, from its grotesque action to Johnny Cage being Johnny Cage. After missing out on the first movie, which opened to divisive reviews, Cage will finally make his onscreen debut, with Karl Urban set to play the iconic character, who’ll be stepping up to save Earthrealm.

And going by the trailer, The Boys star Karl Urban seems perfect in the shoes of Johnny Cage, and the sequel itself looks far more in line with the games than the 2021 outing, whether it’s the heightened action or Cage’s sarcasm. Considering 2025 is shaping up to be a major year for video game movies, ranging from a sequel to The Super Mario Bros to a new Resident Evil movie, hopefully, the sequel to Mortal Kombat will live up to the hype.

Mortal Kombat 2 Will Finally Unleash the Tournament

Beyond introducing the fan-favorite, the sequel will also address the biggest issue of the first movie, which skirted past one of the defining aspects of the entire franchise: the tournament. Since the IP’s inception, tournaments have served as the cornerstone for the series’ narrative framework.

The first movie, however, skipped this element entirely in favor of a brand new character, who is now entirely sidelined in the sequel. Shortly after the first movie’s release, co-writer Greg Russo revealed that they always intended the second movie to be about the tournament, and thankfully, this seems to be the case (via Collider).

Movie one, we were always kind of setting this up as — well I was setting it up, it’s basically in my head — I always saw [movie one] as pre-tournament, then [movie two is] hopefully tournament, then [movie three is] post-tournament. So the idea was that this was going to be a pre-tournament movie that would hopefully sow the seeds for the tournament.

While it remains to be seen if this movie could avoid the critical shortcomings of the first entry, fans can expect to see Urban dishing out some solid action moves, something that wasn’t easy on his part.

Karl Urban Deemed Mortal Kombat 2 His Biggest Challenge

No stranger to a physically intensive role, after a relatively less action-heavy stint in The Boys season 4, the actor was eying another major potential action role. Shortly after, he was offered the script of Mortal Kombat, whose production ended up testing the actor’s limits.

Speaking of the physical challenges that arrived with the gig, especially concerning the meticulous choreography when it came to the martial arts, Urban described the experience as his most challenging role to date (via EW).

I asked for a heavy-action content movie, and for my sins, they gave me one. It was the most challenging role that I’ve ever undertaken in my career. It’s the martial arts. The form and the style of martial arts is so specific, and the choreography, at times, is so definitive in its movement, and there’s a precision of execution for it to look good. It was a huge challenge.

Given that action has always been the crux of the games, with the IP returning to the big screen for a sequel that seems more true to the series than its predecessor, here’s hoping Urban’s commitment will pay off.
