Netflix‘s Sex/Life star Sarah Shahi got candid about her breakup with co-star Adam Demos after five years of dating. The actress revealed that being a parent is no easy job and can affect relationships, even when there is love. In a recent appearance on the Let’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari podcast, she explained what went wrong between them.
Without airing any kind of laundry ’cause I’m not here for that. I do think when you have kids, it’s hard to build a life when you have children unless the person truly, truly, truly wants that as well.
Although she explained it was not because of Demos, but because of the bond she shares with her three kids from her ex-husband, Steve Howey: son William, 16, and twins Violet and Knox, 10.
I show up as a parent in a very specific way. I parent the way I was parented. For my mother, we grew up in Texas—single mom of three kids. There were no boundaries. We could walk into our mom’s bedroom at any time and we walked into the bathroom at any time. I think that can be a little challenging for somebody who may not be used to having kids.
She added that while love is the easy part, sometimes it is the life stuff that gets difficult.
When Did Sarah Shahi and Adam Demos Start Dating?
Sarah Shahi and Adam Demos met on the sets of Netflix’s Sex/Life back in 2020. Straight away, they felt a connection, and that turned into a five-year relationship (via PEOPLE).
They confirmed their relationship in 2021 via Instagram. Over the next few years, the couple spoke openly about their love in public, with Demos once telling PEOPLE that Shahi was a goddess and that he was her biggest fan.
Despite everything and five years of celebrating each other and sharing their love with fans, the couple reportedly broke up at the start of 2025. In January 2026, Shahi confirmed their breakup in an interview with US Weekly.
There was an element of the relationship that people really felt belonged to them, which was very sweet and heart-warming. The flip to that is when things end, you feel like you’re going through it twice. You’re going through it emotionally on a personal level, and then you’re going through it again on a much bigger level.
While Shahi has been vocal about their split, Demos has yet to comment on the end of their five-year relationship.

Sarah Shahi has experienced the end of two long-term relationships: first, her 11-year marriage to Steve Howey, and later, her half-decade-long relationship with Adam Demos. Yet, the actress has not given up on finding love.
While on Let’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari, she revealed she is still hoping to find love and is ready to start dating. However, this time around, her expectations have changed a bit.
I want my next relationship to be about me. I’m not looking for a stepparent. I just want a boyfriend—someone that can just take me out and I can be on the beach and just be all sweaty and have s*x all the time.
She also stated that she wants someone who is purely devoted to her and ready to jump on board if the connection deepens.
