That Yona dude shapeshifted again? It doesn’t look human at all. But what is he up to now? Unfortunately, this question wasn’t answered in the episode. Instead, it was Ogun who stole all the spotlight in Fire Force Season 3 Part 2 Episode 5, not in a positive sense, though.
For one, this episode seemed like a buildup for what’s to come next. The current goal of Fire Fighter Division 8 has been decided thanks to Arrow’s help (gosh, she looks awesome). Also, the stakes have amped up more than ever. But as always, Fire Force never fails to disappoint me, even amidst this hype. Well, let me get into the details.
Company 8’s Real Purpose at Amaterasu: What We Know So Far
The real mystery behind Amaterasu hasn’t been solved yet; probably won’t be even in the next episode. But as Arrow suggests to Company 8, it must be linked to the Evangelists’ plan to start the Cataclysm, and could also be the only feasible way to bring Shinra & Iris back.
The two just disappeared into thin air, and our only guess is that they must be inside Adolla. Now, before I jump into Ogun’s introduction in the episode, let me get a few things straight that I found somewhat funny. Like, the relation between that Kurono guy and his boss. The world is ending, and Kurono is still concerned about his low salary!
Another thing I’d like to mention is Sho’s current character growth. Honestly, it feels really good seeing him aid the firefighters and Shinra instead of the Evangelists. Even though his screentime was brief, it was worth it. Wish he could aid Company 8 against Charon as well.
Episode 5 Solely Focuses on Ogun, Which Again Felt a Little Extra
As Company 8 drives their Matchbox toward Amaterasu, Ogun spots them and comes into contact with Arthur and the others. Somehow, though, stupid Arthur manages to convince Ogun to help them on their mission to reach Amaterasu. But he was already in a flashback!

We see Ogun’s backstory from the time when he, Arthur, and Shinra first met each other. Now, usually, backstories are supposed to work for the better of a series, right? But not in the case of Fire Force, because it wasn’t serious at all. With goofy slice-of-life music and cheerful vibes, Ogun’s backstory diminished the weight of the world’s current situation.
Also, the backstory didn’t give any substantial context for the storyline. It didn’t provide any new information. It felt as if it was just there to drag on the episode, because we already knew how close the three were, and also, Ogun has never really been a character in the spotlight. So how would I care?
If you say the backstory was given just so viewers can care, then no thanks. Not when the Great Cataclysm is almost here. Then fast-forward to Company 8’s clash against Charon and the other Infernals; even that felt pretty dragged out. Instead, I would’ve much preferred to see what’s happening with the team that went inside Amaterasu.
Not only did I not get to see that, but Ogun again came into the spotlight for no reason. His fight with Charon was, of course, visually stunning but had no narrative weight. With another flashback, Ogun could come back, right? Nope, he gets beaten to a pulp.
Fire Force Season 3 Episode 17: Final Verdict

The episode ends without resolving any of the major conflicts, and no progress is shown either. However, the animation, as always, was top-notch. I can give it that. Still, the way Season 3 Part 2 is shaping up, it can turn out to be the series’ best season (except for a few episodes like this). Because the way the Great Cataclysm would be stopped after saving Shinra and Iris is something worth waiting for. What do you say?
Fire Force Season 3 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
