Oshi no Ko Season 3 Episode 1 Review: Why Does B-Komachi’s Evolution Feel Unsettling

The unsettling vibes of Oshi no Ko haven’t left at all. In Season 3, they’re amped up by a few more notches. Six months have already passed since their first original upload, POP IN 2. The video went so viral that B-Komachi’s YouTube channel has now reached 360K subscribers, which is honestly crazy. But the numbers don’t necessarily mean everything is going smoothly.

In these mere six months, a lot has changed. Literally, a lot. Everyone has gotten busy with their own separate lives. Akane has grown significantly more popular and is now a full-fledged actress. Apparently, she’s still dating Aqua, which makes sense. But as for B-Komachi, Kana, Ruby, and Mem-cho are barely holding up. Props to Mem-cho, though. She used all of her own YouTube connections just to help the group stay relevant & grow bigger. Honestly, it was a pretty insightful watch too.

Aqua & Ruby’s Biological Father Is Right There!

Anyway, before going further into the details, how come we don’t talk about the opening for this new Oshi no Ko season? Given the fact that the show’s openings have never missed so far, Season 3 is no different. Yep, it’s PEAK again. Vibe-wise, it actually feels similar to the first iconic “Idol” song. But you know what? The visuals are too spoilery, it feels.

Still, without actually spoiling anything, the best part of the visuals was, of course, when they showed Ruby and Aqua’s biological father. And they just kept showing him multiple times! In Season 2, it was revealed that he is not dead at all. In fact, he’s still up to no good. So seeing him pop up so often in the opening sequence is definitely ringing some ominous bells.

Kana Deserves All the Love, But Aqua Got Other Plans

Personally, the best moment of Episode 1 was Kana’s emotional breakdown. Yes, she’s the typical tsundere character who’s been bottling up her emotions for a long time, but seeing Aqua seriously dating Akane, and not even contacting her anymore, is just brutal, man.

Mem-cho, being the eldest in the group, handled the situation really well. But this is clearly something that needs to be addressed. If Kana keeps sinking into sadness, then, as the episode also pointed out, their performances will just keep getting worse, eventually leading to fewer followers and all that. Ruby has also been a bit spaced out lately, and we don’t really know why.

However, by the end of the episode, we see her meeting B-Komachi’s former manager, Saitou Ichigo. Could that be related?

How Casually MEMcho Brought Out Aqua’s Real Self

Okay, surely no one saw this coming, right? Aqua almost physically dominated Mem-cho! But the way it played out made a lot of sense. Given that Aqua’s mind is essentially that of a middle-aged man, he doesn’t feel strongly about acting this way toward anyone. That’s not to say he’s inconsiderate. If anything, it’s the opposite.

Because he cares about Kana so much (maybe a little too much, as Mem-cho notices) he doesn’t want to involve her with him at all. Now that she’s an idol, Aqua doesn’t want to risk history repeating itself, the same kind of situation that took Ai’s life. If another deranged fan were to find out Kana is in a relationship, who knows what could happen to her?

With that, Mem-cho was easily the real MVP of the episode, and it’s always great to have her around. In terms of plot progression, though, nothing major really happens this time. Still, the school scene where Ruby chats with Frill and Minami was pretty uplifting. Anyway, in the next episode, we’ll probably get to see more of what Ruby is actually up to.

Oshi no Ko Season 3 is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
