Long before Heated Rivalry became a pop-culture phenomenon with queer romance at the backdrop of a sport, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were circling a similar idea in their own way. If they had gone through with it, the duo could have altered their career and Hollywood’s relationship with LGBTQIA+ storytelling.

Damon has revealed that he and Affleck once considered adapting The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story. The project never moved forward because the script wasn’t good enough, but the idea of two A-list actors willingly doing something so bold feels refreshing.
What Is The Dreyfus Affair That Matt Damon Almost Adapted?
The Dreyfus Affair: A Love Story is an intimate novel published by Peter Lefcourt in 1993. The story follows Randy Dreyfus, a married superstar outfielder, who falls in love with his team’s second baseman named D.J. Pickett. The dynamic here is interesting because the two are playing a sport that is seen as inherently masculine.
So to have two protagonists share such a tender connection against the backdrop of a quite possibly homophobic community makes this such a complex and interesting exploration. Had Matt Damon and Ben Affleck followed through with the adaptation and re-worked the script, the cultural impact would’ve been massive.
Think Brokeback Mountain, a film that challenged all norms, starred two bankable male stars as gay lovers, and not in a caricaturish way, but as layered protagonists. But while the Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal starrer movie played out in a more secretive way, The Dreyfus Affair would have unfolded in a public arena and occupied locker rooms with more visibility.
Can Heated Rivalry’s Success Reignite a Future Adaptation?

Heated Rivalry proved that queer romance can become mainstream because the series gained insane popularity. The intense chemistry between Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, plus the unapologetic nature of their intimacy, made audiences hungry for more.
Here’s an overview of the show:
TitleHeated Rivalry CreatorJacob Tierney (creator, writer, director) Main castHudson Williams (Shane Hollander), Connor Storrie (Ilya Rozanov), plus supporting ensemble, including Rose Landry and Svetlana’s families and teammates. Based onHeated Rivalry, the second novel in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers seriesRotten Tomatoes (Tomatometer | Popcornmeter)98% | 95%
They’ve even announced the second season because viewers couldn’t get enough of the duo (via Time). This cultural shift makes the long-abandoned idea of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck relevant again, and while the two won’t revisit The Dreyfus Affair as actors, they can certainly create and finance it through their shared production house.
Most importantly, Heated Rivalry showed us that queer sports stories don’t require a tragedy to exist, they can be fun, joyful, conflicted, and expansive, all at once. So, do you think this could give Damon and Affleck a fresh new canvas to paint another LGBTQIA+ movie with a better script?
You can watch Heated Rivalry on HBO (USA).
