Starting strong, Season 1 Episode 18 of Vinland Saga, titled “Out of the Cradle,” is one of the great episodes the series has produced so far. Why is it considered one of the great episodes? The episode is focused mainly on one of the series’ main characters, Prince Canute.

Canute’s transformation is featured in this episode. Quietly but powerfully, from an innocent boy, Canute transforms into a ruler shaped by suffering and resolve. As he is a major antagonist of the series, the transformation sequence was very crucial for the narrative.

Season 1 Episode 14 of Vinland Saga, titled “The Light of Dawn,” is one of the more focused episodes on the morally gray character of the series, and the most iconic one, Askeladd. The episode features Askeladd’s internal conflicts and his pride in Wales.

Furthermore, his disdain for Viking brutality gives the story a sharp political and philosophical edge. Cornered by the blizzard, Askeladd and his men change course and decide to return to Gainsborough by crossing through the Earldom of Mercia.

8. Season 1 Episode 9 – Battle of London Bridge

When it comes to an intriguing and action-packed representation of Viking warfare, nothing truly beats Season 1 Episode 9 of the anime, titled “Battle of London Bridge.” However, the episode does not only stay on the topic of a brutal and tactical showcase of the battle.

The attention of the episode also shifts to Thorfinn, the main protagonist of the anime and manga series. It displays how Thorfinn’s whole identity has become centred around violence, with his raw talent and recklessness on full display for the viewers.

If we count a few of the most emotional and plot-forming incidents in the series so far, Thors’ death is probably one of them. As significant as it is, Season 1 Episode 6 of the anime, titled “The Journey Begins,” features it, alongside how it impacted young Thorfinn.

As the title suggests, this episode can be considered truly as the point when Thorfinn’s journey actually begins. While Thors’ death reshapes the entire series, his refusal to kill and his final words plant the moral foundation that haunted Thorfinn for years to come, as we all know by now.

6. Season 1 Episode 22 – Lone Wolf

Episode 22 from Vinland Saga Season 1, titled “Lone Wolf,” is a very pivotal episode for the storyline, thus earning a higher spot on this list. In the episode, Thorfinn begins his duel against Askeladd, while Canute and Thorkell act as witnesses. However, Thorfinn is unable to strike as he stands overwhelmed by the extraordinary mood that overtakes Askeladd after Bjorn’s departure.

Nevertheless, the significance of this episode isn’t towards Thorfinn’s character, but that of Askeladd’s character. During this episode, Askeladd’s execution of King Sweyn cements him as one of anime’s most complex characters.

5. Season 1 Episode 23 – Miscalculation

Vinland Saga Season 1 Episode 23, titled “Miscalculation,” is an episode centred around Canute’s character. After the assassination attempt on Canute’s life, spreading rumors through York points towards the King as the culprit who attempted to kill Canute.

This ties the King’s hands from issuing any command that might cause harm to Canute, as it may escalate things against him. Furthermore, the emotional peak in the episode favors Canute more than Thorfinn’s narrative, showing the balance tips towards Canute.
