It has been over two decades since Guy Pearce headlined Christopher Nolan’s breakout hit Memento, and while the movie continues to be celebrated by Nolan’s fans, Pearce himself does not look back fondly on his performance. Although he has acknowledged Nolan’s prowess as a filmmaker, the actor confessed to hating his own performance, adding (via Variety):
I’m having an existential crisis. I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie. I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&A of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did. And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down. I know why I didn’t work with Chris again — it’s because I’m no good in ‘Memento.’
Although Pearce suggested his own performance played a role in why he never reunited with Nolan after the latter’s boom in the mid-2000s, there was another major factor behind why that collaboration never materialized.

Guy Pearce Was Supposedly Blocked From Working With Nolan
While Pearce and Nolan discussed the director’s subsequent projects—including Insomnia and Batman Begins after the success of Memento, these conversations didn’t lead anywhere. As for why? It was much more of a WB problem than Nolan, who was working with the prestige studio at the time.
Although Pearce feels his performance may be partly responsible for not working with Nolan again, the main roadblock was a WB executive. According to the actor, a studio exec was vehemently against the prospect of hiring Pearce (via THR), recounting:
He spoke to me about roles a few times over the years. The first Batman and The Prestige. But there was an executive at Warner Bros. who quite openly said to my agent, ‘I don’t get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to employ Guy Pearce.’ So, in a way, that’s good to know. I mean, fair enough. There are some actors I don’t get. But it meant I could never work with Chris.
Considering The Odyssey auteur worked exclusively with WB for the better part of two decades before parting ways with the studio during the pandemic, it makes sense why a potential reunion with Pearce was out of the cards.
Guy Pearce Deserves Another Shot at a Christopher Nolan Collab
Despite headlining major hits in the early 2000s, Pearce’s struggle within the Hollywood system was consistent, which eventually pushed him to step away from the mainstream circuit in favor of creative freedom. In recent years, however, the actor has returned to the limelight, especially following his performance in The Brutalist.

Having earned his first-ever Oscar nomination this year, it feels only fitting that Pearce reunite with the auteur who gave him his first major break. With Nolan having long since moved on from WB, given his stature in the industry, it’s unlikely any executive would be able to sway his casting decisions.
Whether that reunion ultimately comes to fruition remains to be seen. Still, even if Pearce remains in the minority when it comes to the actor’s stance on his own performance in Memento, he undoubtedly deserves the opportunity to bring his A-game to another Nolan movie.
