Though Avatar: The Last Airbender begins with four primary forms of bending, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air, the series later introduces several advanced sub-skills. One of the most dangerous and significant among them is lightningbending.

Unlike standard firebending, lightningbending demands extreme control, emotional balance, and precision. Only a small number of benders across the Avatar world are capable of generating or redirecting lightning, and even fewer can wield it effectively in combat.

Popularized through Azula in the original series, the technique is later practiced by multiple characters in both Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra. In the era of The Last Airbender, lightningbending is a closely guarded technique, practiced mainly by elite Fire Nation masters.

By the time of The Legend of Korra, however, it had become more widespread, used not only in combat but also for industrial power generation. Even so, not all lightningbenders are equal; some rely on raw power, others on speed, refined technique, or a deep understanding of bending philosophy. Here is the ranking of Lightningbenders in the Avatar universe, ranked from worst to best.

6. Zuko

Introduced in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Zuko ultimately grows into one of the most skilled and well-rounded firebenders in the Avatar universe, even going on to teach firebending to Avatar Aang himself. However, despite his mastery of fire, Zuko struggles significantly when it comes to lightningbending.

During Book Two, Iroh attempts to teach Zuko the principles of lightning generation, emphasizing emotional balance and inner peace. Zuko, still burdened by inner conflict and unresolved anger, is unable to meet these requirements and fails to generate lightning.

However, Zuko does successfully learn lightning redirection, which he later demonstrates during his confrontation with Fire Lord Ozai, safely redirecting Ozai’s lightning back at him.

5. Lightning Bolt Zolt

Lightning Bolt Zolt is introduced in The Legend of Korra as the feared leader of the Triple Threat Triad and one of Republic City’s most dangerous criminals. Beyond his reputation, Zolt is a highly accomplished firebender who has mastered both lightning generation and lightning redirection.

Zolt’s skill is most clearly demonstrated during his confrontation with Amon. In combat, he blends rapid, controlled fire attacks with sudden lightning strikes. Unlike many lightningbenders, Zolt is capable of sustaining a continuous electrical output, a feat he uses to slice through multiple metal structures with remarkable efficiency.

Despite his impressive abilities, Zolt’s trajectory comes to an abrupt end when he accepts Amon’s challenge. The encounter leaves him stripped of his bending entirely. While his downfall is swift, Lightning Bolt Zolt remains one of the most technically proficient lightningbenders of his era.

4. Xu Ping An

Xu Ping An, the primary antagonist of The Rise of Kyoshi, stands as one of the most dangerous lightningbenders in Avatar history. As the ruthless leader of the Yellow Necks, he terrorized large portions of the Earth Kingdom during the late fourth century, leaving devastation in his wake.

Already an exceptional firebender, Xu Ping An elevated his threat level even further by mastering lightning generation at a time when the technique was nearly forgotten, making his abilities especially rare and terrifying.

His lightningbending was remarkably refined. Unlike most practitioners, Xu Ping An did not rely on the traditional circular movements used to separate yin and yang energy. Instead, he required only a deep, controlled breath before unleashing lightning.

He could fire bolts rapidly with minimal exertion and was even capable of sustaining a continuous stream after a second inhalation. Despite his overwhelming power and precision, Xu Ping An ultimately met his end in a climactic battle against Avatar Kyoshi.

3. Mako

Introduced as a vigilante in Avatar: The Legend of Korra, Mako eventually becomes one of Avatar Korra’s most reliable allies. Trained in both firebending and lightningbending by his former employer, Lightning Bolt Zolt, Mako develops into one of the most versatile lightning users of his era.

Unlike traditional practitioners, he can generate lightning from either hand with minimal charge time and almost no visible arm movement. Mako is also capable of sustaining lightning for several seconds, a skill he regularly employs while working at Republic City’s power plant and later in combat situations.

His control extends beyond direct attacks; he can channel lightning through metal cables without losing focus, which also allows him to land a clean lightning strike on Amon, an act that even earns reluctant praise from the Equalist leader.

Perhaps most impressively, Mako applies lightningbending creatively. He famously defeats Ming-Hua by directing lightning through her water tendrils. His adaptability and innovation firmly place him among the best lightningbenders in the Avatar universe.

2. Fire Lord Ozai

Fire Lord Ozai stands among the most powerful firebenders in Avatar history and is one of the few masters capable of generating lightning. What sets him apart from nearly every other lightningbender is his ability to produce lightning simultaneously from both hands with little to no charging time, a feat he demonstrates during The Day of Black Sun invasion.

When empowered by Sozin’s Comet, Ozai’s lightning reached an entirely different level. His strikes became massive and destructive, branching outward over vast distances.

During this battle, he seamlessly alternated between firebending and lightning generation while remaining airborne, showing exceptional mastery and physical coordination.

The speed, intensity, and versatility of Ozai’s lightningbending firmly establish him as one of the best and most dangerous lightning users in the Avatar universe, until his reign ended when Avatar Aang stripped him of his bending entirely.

1. Azula

Azula is widely regarded as one of the gifted firebenders in the history of the Avatar world. A true prodigy, she mastered nearly every known firebending technique at a remarkably young age, including the rare and highly dangerous art of lightningbending.

Her unique ability to generate blue flames sets her apart as a singular figure among firebenders. Azula consistently demonstrated her combat dominance, holding her own against elite Kyoshi Warriors and even overpowering Avatar Aang in direct confrontations.

After learning about lightning redirection, Azula adapted quickly, incorporating the counter-technique into her duel with Zuko. During Sozin’s Comet, her raw power increased even further, making her lightning strikes even more destructive.

However, Azula’s growing mental instability ultimately undermined her effectiveness. Despite her superior power, her fractured focus led to her defeat at Katara’s hands, marking the tragic fall of one of the greatest lightningbenders ever known.
