How Sydney Sweeney’s Huge Fan Moment Became Reality in The Housemaid: “She blew me away”

Sydney Sweeney just gave yet another stellar performance in The Housemaid, widely praised by critics and general audiences worldwide, but that’s not the only satisfying element she drew from the R-rated film. Turns out, the sets of the film also turned into a huge fan moment for the actress, since she literally grew up as “a huge fan” of Amanda Seyfried, her co-star in the film.

During a recent interview, the Anyone but You actress admitted to the same, confessing that she has been a massive Seyfried fan since childhood, to the point where she “memorized Mamma Mia!” and felt it was “a dream” to get to experience what working with her feels like this up close and personal. Sweeney said (per Entertainment Weekly):

Getting to see her play such an unhinged character was such a treat, because usually I’m playing the unhinged character. [Laughs] I always looked at Millie as the eyes of the audience. And so as the audience is learning things, Millie is learning as well, which is very different for me because usually I’m the one losing it.

And that’s not all. Continuing, the actress went on to gush in praise of her fan-beloved co-star’s performance, saying about the same:

And so it was so fun being able to watch an actor just come to life and just bring it every single time, doing something different every single time. She completely killed it, and she blew me away. It was so fun.

While Sweeney played the role of Millie, a young woman looking for a fresh start, Amanda Seyfried did wonders to her character of Nina, who is a wealthy wife and mother who hires Millie to be a live-in housemaid in her beautiful house – which, by the way, shortly goes from a dream come true to a nightmare, as Nina goes from oddly demanding to downright unglued, leading Millie to question her own safety.

Sydney Sweeney is Also a Huge Fan of The Housemaid Books

Besides growing up as a fan of Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney also admitted that she was a huge fan of The Housemaid books, written by Freida McFadden, on which this erotic psychological thriller film is based. Talking to PEOPLE recently about her take on reprising her role as Millie in potential sequel films, she shared the same, saying,

I would love to. I was such a huge fan of the books, so I would be just as happy as everyone else being able to see more Housemaids come to life and getting to explore more of Millie.

Not to mention, she is also pretty much in love with her onscreen character from this respective saga. She added of her character,

She’s spicy. She is a fighter. She knows what she believes in, and she stands up for it. I love characters like that. I love seeing movies that have just fully embraced female rage.

Well, her positive outlook on potential sequels is surely a delight for fans, considering how there are two more novels in the books series that can be adapted into live-action: The Housemaid’s Secret from 2023 and The Housemaid Is Watching from 2024. Oh, and also, that short story, The Housemaid’s Wedding, which is set between these two books.

Meanwhile, Amanda Seyfried Worked Hard to Surprise Sydney Sweeney

While it must have already felt like a dream come true for Sydney Sweeney to get to work with Amanda Seyfried, her co-star worked equally hard to surprise her in the film through her character. Thanks to Nina’s unpredictability, Seyfried and director Paul Feig were able to improvise ways to utilize her character’s traits to completely surprise Sweeney.

As Seyfried recalled during a recent interview (via Entertainment Weekly),

It was like a ton of anything goes. Paul and I would just play around as much as we wanted. We had a lot of time to do so, and we’d make each other laugh with new ideas. And every time Paul would come in with a new note to switch things up, it was a surprise for Syd, because Nina is so nuts and so unpredictable that I could surprise her and throw her off.

Plus, working this way also proved to be “so delightful for both of us,” in Seyfried’s words. She explained,

And that was so delightful for both of us. When you’re working in a scene, you do things over and over and over again, and if you have a chance to surprise the other actor, you run with it. We had a lot of those moments that we just delighted in.

As amazing as that sounds, it would be truly interesting to witness it in person as well. That said, you might as well catch The Housemaid while it is still playing on the screens right now, unless you’re waiting for it to head to streaming! Don’t you agree?

The Housemaid is currently playing in theatres in the U.S.
