If you met George R.R. Martin at one of his events, what would you ask him? A Game of Thrones fan shared on Reddit their experience meeting the author, especially after asking him a very strange question about Jeor Mormont.

According to the fan’s theory, the Old Bear and formerly the head of House Mormont came from the Targaryen bloodline. Enumerating some points backing up the claim, the Redditor was convinced Jeor could be Maegor Brightflame, the son of Prince Aerion Brightflame.

Martin immediately debunked the theory; however, not a lot of readers pay attention to House Mormont, given their status as a minor family. There is so much to uncover about them, and who knows? We’ll learn more about Jeor’s origins in The Winds of Winter.

The Winds of Winter Can Reveal More of Jeor Mormont’s Backstory

One of the many intriguing parts of Jeor’s story is why he left Bear Island to join the Night’s Watch. After abdicating his seat in favor of his son, Ser Jorah, he took the black and eventually rose through the ranks and was elected Lord Commander.

Because his story was not fully fleshed out in the books, Martin has the opportunity to provide readers with more clues about this character. We already know that prior to Robert’s Rebellion, he had already given up his noble seat.

A plausible reason for this is that he fought for House Targaryen during the rebellion. When Robert Baratheon ascended to the throne, Jeor might have considered the next honorable thing to do was to serve the Night’s Watch.

The fan theory that Jeor is Maegor Brightflame can be a long shot, but with deeper exploration, Martin could make this happen. However, he gave a negative answer to this question, so it may not be what he intended to happen.

GRRM’s Response Could Mean He’s Avoiding Fan Theories

Martin has become wary of reading fan theories. He explained in his interview on The Wheeler Centre that he avoids visiting online forums for fear that he would gain ideas for his novel, or worse, he would find out some fans have figured out the plot twist, and now he had to change it.

His answer, “No, I don’t think so,” regarding Jeor being Maegor Brightflame, could simply be him avoiding making any confirmation. Even if someone were to ask him something and it turns out right, he would never spoil it.

While the long wait for The Winds of Winter continues to stretch before us, more and more fan theories will emerge, and Martin will have to avoid going online until he finally delivers the book.
