Bella Thorne opened up about the s*xual abuse she faced when she was a child in her memoir poetry, The Life of a Wannabe Mogul: Mental Disarray. She shared that she was abused from the ages of 6 to 14. In the heartbreaking poem that came out in 2019, she wrote about how she dealt with the shame and disgust.

Thorne wrote, “He didn’t have to deal with the countless times he molested me / He didn’t deal with the countless times I felt ashamed or disgusting” (via Business Insider). She further shared that she let the abuse continue for so long and added that she put her trust and love in her captor because she felt it was the only way she could deal with it. Thorne shared:

Putting trust or love into your captor because it’s the only way you can deal with the situation in frontof you. The only way I could deal with it I guess, is by loving itloving this cruel nature of his. Hating what he was doing to mebut trying to convince myself that I loved it

She blamed herself in the poem for not stopping the abuse soon. She shared, “I was letting it happen to me. / I wasn’t kicking his teeth in.” She called herself “selfish” in her poem, sharing, “So how can I sit here / and write this and do nothing about it. / because / I / am / selfish.”

A year before the memoir came out, she revealed her s*xual assault story in an emotional Instagram post. She shared, “I was sexually abused and physically growing up from the day I can remember till I was 14..when I finally had the courage to lock my door at night and sit by it” (via Business Insider). She was supporting the Time’s Up movement, a protest against harassment in Hollywood.

Bella Thorne Revealed Why She Didn’t File a Complaint

In the second part of her memoir poetry, Bella Thorne explained why she didn’t file a complaint against her abuser. She shared that she didn’t want to go to the police because she felt the legal system was so “f**ked up.” She further accused the system of making “victims feel like villains.” She wrote:

I don’t want to sit down with the cops and convince them I was raped many times / why should I have to convince someone I was taken advantage of?

She elaborated on why she chose not to detail everything that happened to her in the poetry during an interview with Logan Paul. She shared that she was selfish and didn’t want to put herself through the pain of remembering things that she tried to forget for so long. She shared:

I am selfish because I won’t just put myself through the pain of describing every story in detail that I’ve spent so long trying to forget and have reworked my mental brain so that I don’t have flashbacks all the time and to go back there again, over and over and over.

However, she told Paul that the book helped her “mentally.” She shared that it helped her “open my brain.” She shared, “I guess I’m always searching for an answer, and, you know, I’m thinking maybe this book will be it. I don’t know.”

During an interview on BUILD Series, Bella Thorne was asked about transitioning from a Disney star and the paparazzi scrutiny in her life. She shared that the transition from Disney was rough. She shared that people may think the transition was easier, given she had dealt with more grave situations like s*xual harassment.

However, she shared that the paparazzi were following her when she was still being subjected to the harassment. She shared:

I was still being molested when paparazzi were still f**king following me. So it’s pretty hard in my mind to think about these big flashlight photographs and everyone thinking they know me and talking about me, but having no idea the type of mistreatment that I was still dealing with at that time. That everyone around me saw and did nothing.

While promoting her book on ABC News, she revealed that she identified as pansexual. She shared, “I like sexy girls, I like sexy guys. I like sexy in general, you know?” She has previously dated actor Tyler Posey, rapper Mod Sun, media personality Tana Mongeau, and Italian singer Benjamin Mascolo. She is currently engaged to producer Mark Emms.
