What Happened At the Chariot Race in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Season 2, Episode 2?
After the major reveal in episode 1, episode 2 begins with Stymphalian Birds trying hard to enter the camp’s weakened barrier. Annabeth notices the danger and warns that it might not take too long for the birds to break it. Annabeth and Percy devise a plan to contact Chiron, while Percy defies his cabin confinement.
She sneaks into Tantalus’ office, discovers a drachma and a file of Chiron. With the offering to Iris, the Goddess of the Rainbow, she contacts Chiron. He gives her a secret warning that she should take the quest to find the Golden Fleece, but Percy cannot know. Kronos is behind the poisoning, so he definitely wants Percy to go on the quest, and it’s tied directly to the Great Prophecy. Percy should never know this.
Meanwhile, Tantalus confronts Percy about breaking camp rules, but Percy reminds him that the chariot race is allowed under camp laws. Annabeth tells Percy that Chiron wants them to participate in a chariot race. She convinces Percy to join the race separately, so they both have a chance to earn a “boon” for the quest, while secretly trying to prevent him from winning. With Tyson’s help, Percy repairs a chariot, and the race begins.
During the race, the Stymphalian Birds invade the camp, attacking everyone with their sharp beaks. Percy and Annabeth cleverly drive them away by playing a high-pitched sound from a tape recorder, blasting Mariah Carey’s whistle notes.
After that, Tantalus orders a quest to get the Golden Fleece. However, he declared Clarisse the winner because she was the only one who stuck to the race even when the bird attacked. She picks Annabeth, but during the third pick, Annabeth whispers in Clarisse’s ear not to take Percy. She finally chose Chris Rodriguez as the third member. Percy feels betrayed, especially when Tyson reveals Annabeth may have sabotaged him during the race.

That night, Percy packed his bag to go on the quest alone. Percy communicates with Grover in a dream, discussing Annabeth’s betrayal. Waking up, he sneaks to the water’s edge. He asked Poseidon for permission to go on the quest and save Grover. Instead of Poseidon, Hermes appeared, granting Percy approval for the quest.
Hermes even offers a cruise and a bag with useful items, including a Thermos of Wind. He gives instructions for a ship to reach the Sea of Monsters. Hermes hints that he is a father as well, so Percy should also save Luke. He talks about the boat and immediately vanishes.
Annabeth went to meet Percy, and she learns from Tyson that Percy is not there. She tries to stop Percy and confesses that Chiron said something which she must not reveal. She finally admits that her life as a demigod has prevented her from experiencing normal childhood things like rollercoasters and movies. After fighting monsters as a Demigod, she is not able to be a normal kid.
In the meantime, Tantalus arrives and attempts to punish them for violating camp rules. He’s even ready to kill them. Just when he’s ready to shoot, Tyson intervenes, knocking him down. Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson escape on a boat, officially beginning the quest and realizing they can never return to the camp.
With the quest underway, the trio is on a dangerous path filled with monsters, magic, and hidden threats. The Sea of Monsters adventure is just getting started.
