Scream 7 was headed in a completely different direction, and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Skeet Ulrich confirmed what fans had been theorizing for years: Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter was originally meant to become Ghostface. He said,
I’ve been vocal about that. I’m not. When we talked about coming back for 5, it was a three-picture arc for Billy Loomis to slowly turn his daughter into the killer. Obviously, those things didn’t pan out, given certain things that happened. But, no, I know nothing about the seventh.
And it wasn’t a shocking twist or a one-off reveal, but a carefully constructed three-movie arc. The plan was to have Billy continue appearing to subtly manipulate Sam and push her toward an inherited darkness. This would ultimately groom her to become a killer for a new generation.
It was unlike anything that the series had attempted, and was just the right amount of bold and unsettling. So, why didn’t it pan out this way? And could Barrera’s not being fired have resulted in a different outcome for Scream 7? Let’s find out!
Why Was Scream 7’s Epic Arc For Melissa Barrera Cancelled?
Skeet Ulrich’s interview publicly confirmed for the first time that the team had mapped out a slow-burning transformation turning Barrera’s Sam into Ghostface. But the ambitious plan ended due to several behind-the-scenes shake-ups (via EW).
The first blow came when directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinell-Olpin left Scream 7 to focus on other projects, or rather, were forced to step down due to scheduling conflicts with Abigail. Since they were the ones who created Sam’s arc, their departure immediately sabotaged the storyline.

After Melissa Barrera’s firing, Jenna Ortega left the project due to scheduling conflicts. Christopher Landon, who was going to direct the project, also left, and with nearly every creative pillar gone, Scream 7 collapsed and had to be built from the ground up.
Could Not Firing Melissa Barrera Have Kept the Original Plan Intact?

If Melissa Barrera had remained in the cast, the original three-movie plan would have survived somehow. But why was she fired? Spyglass stated her social media posts were interpreted as antisemitic (via Variety).
The studio insisted that this was about a zero-tolerance policy, and not a political disagreement. Whether fans agree with all the justification or not, her removal effectively eliminated the franchise’s lead character.
Had she not been removed, the Scream movies could have kept their continuity, even with directors leaving. Instead, her firing led to several exits, and then Spyglass took the safest route possible. The tragedy is that we didn’t just lose an actress, but the boldest possible direction that the saga has taken in decades.
So, how do you feel about her being fired after knowing that this storyline was a possibility?
Scream 7 is set to release on February 27, 2026 (USA).
