Superman-inspired horror movie Brightburn is heading to streaming platform Netflix. Directed by David Yarovesky, it is a dark take on the DC superhero’s origin story. Brightburn features a talented cast, including Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, and many more.
Brightburn to stream on Netflix very soon
The 2019 horror superhero-inspired film, Brightburn, is coming to Netflix.
As per What’s on Netflix, the movie will arrive on the streaming platform on December 1, 2025.
Known as a dark twist to the origin story of the beloved DC superhero, Superman, Brightburn shows the story of Tori and Kyle, who adopt an extraterrestrial baby boy, Brandon, as their son. However, their story soon takes a horror turn when the kid realizes his superpowers and uses them in an evil way.
Brightburn, which was made on a budget of $6 million, was also subjected to mixed reviews from critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received a score of 57 percent on the Tomatometer and 67 percent on the Popcornmeter.
Despite the mixed reception and the poor box office numbers, there were talks of a sequel happening. However, in April 2024, producer James Gunn confirmed that the sequel might not happen. He said on Threads, “I mean, we talked about it early on. But the rights are all fucked up (I only own half), so it’s unlikely that it will ever happen.”
However, in March 2025, director David Yarovesky told ScreenRant that he wants to work with Gunn again. He said, “I’d love to work with James again. He’s been really spending a lot of time making a movie called Superman, and it’s so funny that we made Brightburn, and now he’s making Superman. If ever someone reaches out to me and says, ‘Hey, we’re going to do another Brightburn,’ the answer is already Yes. I would love to do it, and I’d love to work with James.”
Hence, while fans are eager for a sequel to Brightburn, there has been no official statement from the makers as of writing.
