Jon Watts thinks it’s going to be a “genuinely weird” experience watching Spider-Man: Brand New Day for the first time.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, also known as Spider-Man 4, is now in production. Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Destin Daniel Cretton, the film will once again see Tom Holland reprise his MCU role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The movie has been given a July 2026 release date.
Prior to Brand New Day, Holland led 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, all of which were directed by Watts. Since then, Watts directed 2024’s Wolfs with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, while he also produced and worked on the story for 2025’s Final Destination Bloodlines.
What did Jon Watts say about Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Speaking with Variety, Watts was asked if he’s been able to talk to Cretton about Brand New Day.
“We talked a little bit at the very, very beginning, but I’m very close to that franchise, so I just had to step back and let everyone do their job,” Watts answered. “It’s going to be genuinely weird for me going to see that movie for the first time. It’s going to be a really interesting feeling. It’s a passing of the torch, and I’m curious to see where it goes.”
Plot details for Spider-Man 4 remain under wraps at this time. In addition to Holland, the cast of the Marvel movie includes Zendaya as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III as Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone. Additionally, Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink, The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas, and Severance’s Trammel Tillman have all been cast in undisclosed roles.
Spider-Man 4 hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
