James Gunn Can Greenlight a Creature Commandos Game to Wipe Out the Stain of Kill the Justice League

Warner Bros. Games needs a miracle, and James Gunn might be the only person who can deliver one.

After Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League torched $200 million and Rocksteady’s reputation along with it, DC’s gaming division sits in shambles. But the man who turned talking raccoons and obscure comic teams into billion-dollar properties has already proven the Creature Commandos concept works. Now he just needs to greenlight the video game version.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect. Gunn’s animated series launched in December 2024 to solid reviews and audience appreciation, demonstrating that a team of literal monsters can carry a DC property when handled with his signature blend of heart and violence.

More importantly, the DC Studios CEO has absolute authority to approve projects across film, television, and games. He’s already joked about the advantage of being his own boss (via IGN):

I just wrote seven episodes of this TV show and was into it. And then I luckily had a really great CEO at DC Studios that was me, and I greenlit my own show.

That self-awareness about his unique position makes the case even stronger. Gunn greenlit a second season of Creature Commandos without even seeing scripts, showing his faith in the property he created. Why not extend that confidence to interactive media?

Why Creature Commandos Could Succeed Where Suicide Squad Failed Spectacularly

The fundamental difference between a potential Creature Commandos game and the Suicide Squad disaster would come down to creative vision versus corporate mandate. Rocksteady’s reputation was built entirely on single-player narrative experiences, yet Kill the Justice League launched as a live service looter shooter.

James Gunn wouldn’t make that mistake. His track record speaks volumes: Guardians of the Galaxy turned C-list Marvel characters into household names with $2.65 billion across three films. The Suicide Squad rehabilitated the concept after David Ayer’s maligned attempt.

Superman launched the DCU theatrically to favorable reviews and a strong box office. Even Peacemaker has made John Cena’s meathead character genuinely compelling. The man has never delivered a critically panned project because he understands character-driven storytelling over chasing monetization schemes.

A Creature Commandos game under Gunn’s oversight could prioritize co-op gameplay over endless grinds and microtransactions. The monster team setup even works perfectly for four-player co-op. Picture Frankenstein as your tank absorbing damage, G.I. Robot laying down suppressing fire, the Bride executing acrobatic melee attacks, and Doctor Phosphorus controlling zones with radioactive hazards.

That’s four completely different playstyles emerging organically from the characters themselves. More importantly, Gunn would ensure the writing respects players instead of disrespecting beloved characters the way Kill the Justice League murdered Kevin Conroy’s Batman. The animated series proved he balances irreverent humor with genuine emotional stakes perfectly.

Warner Bros. Games Desperately Needs This Win Right Now

The damage Warner Bros. Games has inflicted on itself over the past 18 months is staggering:

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League lost $200 million directly.

Wonder Woman game cancelled after consuming $100+ million over four years.

Monolith Productions shuttered (makers of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor/War).

Player First Games closed (MultiVersus taken offline permanently).

WB Games San Diego eliminated (unannounced AAA free-to-play project cancelled).

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions underperformed commercial expectations.

Rocksteady itself lost 57% of its profit in 2024, dropping to just $2.2 million annually. Staff cuts eliminated 17% of the workforce through layoffs (via 80 Level). The studio that once defined superhero gaming with the Batman Arkham trilogy now struggles to maintain player confidence.

In damage control mode now, Warner Bros. Games has since publicly stated they’re focusing on “Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, Game of Thrones” moving forward. But what actual DC game can they realistically produce? NetherRealm’s Injustice 3 won’t arrive for years minimum. Rocksteady’s next project remains completely unannounced and faces massive skepticism.

James Gunn could deliver redemption with significantly lower risk than attempting another Batman or Superman title. Creature Commandos carries no baggage, no impossible expectations, no legacy to potentially tarnish. It’s a proven concept with built-in audience awareness from the animated series success.

Would you trust James Gunn with a Creature Commandos game after the Suicide Squad disaster? Could a monster team cooperative shooter actually work? Let us know in the comments below!
