Peacemaker Season 2 has just concluded its eight-episode run. The season has seen its ups and downs, and it appears that the finale was originally intended to end on a happy note.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn spoke on his Peacemaker podcast to reveal that his original draft of Thursday night’s episode ended with the dramatic slow-motion walkout of the 11th Street Kids in their new digs — and with their new friends Judomaster (Nhut Le) and Langston Fleury (Tim Meadows). Gunn explained that the last shot would be the newly formed “Checkmate” building with Eagly soaring above it.
Well, that would’ve been a completely different episode from what we got, which was definitely much better, thanks to Peter Safran. Gunn told his colleagues:
I gave [the first draft] to Peter Safran and I said, ‘I had another thing I wrote that I had put on the ending.’And I told him, and he goes, ‘Oh you’ve got to put that in there.’
The ‘another thing’ referred to here was the inclusion of Peacemaker being abducted by A.R.G.U.S. and sent to Salvation. The episode ends ominously as we hear otherworldly noises, setting up for a major showdown on the planet, but it looks like fans are not having it.
Why Is Peacemaker Season 2 Finale the Lowest-Rated Episode
The Peacemaker Season 2 finale is the lowest IMDb-rated episode of the series at 6.8/10, and that comes from all hype and no delivery by James Gunn. Fans took to X to post their reactions, and to be honest, they are valid.

James Gunn hyped the season finale to be the focal point of the DCU’s narrative, leading fans to expect major plot developments and cameos. The episode was mostly a musical number and a lot of character arc developments, which, of course, we enjoyed, but it left a sour taste of wanting more. Here’s Gunn himself hyping the episode to be more than what it was.
James Gunn says the ‘PEACEMAKER’ Season 2 finale is “insane”“I can guarantee it’s the craziest, wildest, most insane and wonderful episode of ‘Peacemaker’ we’ve ever produced” pic.twitter.com/1XkWmJQbMi— DCU PRIME TV (@DCUPRIMETV) October 4, 2025
There’s no doubt that we saw many things that were pretty crazy, wild, and insane, but Gunn said that the last three episodes were so secretive that even his crew wasn’t privy to the information. Gunn tried to save face by revealing what’s to come (via Entertainment Weekly):
Those are the two things that were always a part of this season, Checkmate and especially Salvation. That was always pretty instrumental in the overall, overarching story that I’m telling in the DCU. Lanterns is very connected to all that. It may not seem like it at first, but it is all very connected.
Sure, Gunn, sure. James Gunn begins work on the film Man of Tomorrow as the Salvation arc begins.

James Gunn has provided several key details about his upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. Once again, it appears that Gunn is hyping up a project by revealing too much and losing the plot himself.
Man of Tomorrow will see Superman and Lex Luthor team up to face a greater threat, with Gunn revealing: “It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.” Gunn has also expressed his personal resonance with Lex Luthor, saying that the film will explore Lex’s feelings of being overshadowed by Superman.
The threat appears to be Braniac, as Gunn mentioned in an Instagram post.

Man of Tomorrow is part of what Gunn calls the “Superman Saga,” a four-film storyline set to anchor the first chapter of the new DC Universe, and will not be a direct sequel to 2025’s Superman. Here are some key details about the film.
