Do You Need to Watch Peacemaker Before Man of Tomorrow? James Gunn Has an Answer

James Gunn has an answer about whether the finale of Peacemaker is important for people wanting to see Man of Tomorrow. The director revealed in an interview with Variety that he’s not even expecting people to see Peacemaker.

Building a cinematic universe is a tricky endeavor, and Gunn knows well from his experience over at Marvel that things might get boring if you tell a tale in a convoluted way.

I’m not expecting people to go into ‘Man of Tomorrow’ and know what Salvation is. You’ll find out anything you need to know about metahumans disappearing through that movie.

Well, considering the devastating ending that James Gunn’s Peacemaker Season 2 offered, it seems logical that fans might be confused as to how this affects things.

James Gunn Considers Building a Cinematic Universe “Delicate”

As the interview continued, Gunn talked about how difficult and delicate it is to set up a cinematic universe. From a plethora of storytelling projects to making everything aligned, Gunn recalled that the story is supposed to be interesting.

Mundane projects and repeated storylines make the storyline boring, and for Gunn, that’s not the way to go.

It’s a very, very, very delicate balance when writing these things. People who don’t know the information will get the information in an easy and simple way, but also not to be burdened down by too much sh*t.

He also allegedly took shots at Marvel and referenced certain “stones” (if you know, you know) and nullified them as emotionless.

‘Oh, this magic stone does this and it’s that’ — there’s no emotional aspect to that. A prison in another dimension is easy for me to understand — and say in one sentence.

Of course, with an ending like that of Peacemaker season 2, Gunn’s DCU is taking a bold, new step, and the director wants to make no mistakes.

James Gunn Believes in ‘Less is More’ for the DCU

Marvel and Kevin Feige had the recent realization that they had been creating more projects than people can consume. Well, James Gunn’s comments might mean that the director is doing everything he can to avoid that mistake.

Following the release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel expanded into the Multiverse with several projects in a year. Soon, the quality started dipping, and fans backed out of theaters.

On the other hand, with James Gunn releasing Superman, he too entered the folds of a cinematic universe where pocket universes were explained. These pocket universes were later used in Peacemaker, which, in turn, will be later used in Man of Tomorrow.

Having worked at Marvel for a while, it seems that Gunn knows what he’s doing with the reins of the DCU in his hands now. Of course, Gunn will have to supervise several things in the future of DCU, but we are confident that Gunn will be able to do it.

Do you think James Gunn is right on this one? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Superman and Peacemaker are available to stream on HBO Max (USA).
